ON LUST – PURITAN JOHN OWEN

ON LUST – PURITAN JOHN OWEN: From the YouTube site: Christian Sermons and Audio Books

Read by Pastor Mark Fitzpatrick of Arann Reformed Baptist Church. Arann Reformed Baptist Church www.arann-reformed.com

John Owen, two vol 6 excerpts read and commented on by Pastor Fitzpatrick:

TALKING POINTS AND QUOTATIONS FROM VIDEO:

  • The vital role of the law for the conscience, to mortify our flesh
  • He talks about bringing our lust to the gospel, to not only find forgiveness, but to find further conviction of its guilt, to find victory over sin
  • Reading from Owen’s text regarding the above
  • Look on Him whom thou hast pierced and be in bitterness, say to thy soul:
  • [Below, the initial 4-minute reading by Pastor Mark Fitzpatrick is quoted; the second 4-minute reading is summarized]
  • [The quoted words are such that one might speak to his/her own conscience to cause it to feel more guilt for a lust that it has become accustomed to indulging without regard to the blood of Christ…]
  • “What have I done? What love, what mercy, what blood, what grace have I despised and trampled on? Is this the return I make to the Father for His love; to the Son for His blood; to the Holy Ghost for His grace?”
  • “Do I thus requite the Lord? Have I defiled the heart that Christ died to wash; that the blessed Spirit hast chosen to dwell in?”
  • “Can I keep myself out of the dust? What can I say to the dear Lord Jesus?”
  • “How shall I hold up my head with any boldness before Him?”
  • “Do I count communion with Him of so little value that for this vile lust’s sake I have scarce left any room in my heart?”
  • “How shall I escape if I neglect so great a salvation?”
  • “In the meantime, what shall I say to the Lord?”
  • “Love, mercy, grace, goodness, peace, joy, consolation; I have despised them all, and esteemed them as a thing of naught, that I might harbor a lust in my heart.”
  • “Have I obtained a view of God’s Fatherly countenance that I might behold His face and provoke Him to His face?”
  • “Was my soul washed that room might be made for new defilements?”
  • “Shall I endeavor to disappoint the end of the death of Christ?”
  • “Shall I daily grieve that Spirit whereby I am sealed to the day of redemption?”
  • “Entertain thy conscience daily with this treaty; see if it can stand before this aggravation of its guilt. If this make it not sink in some measure and melt, I fear thy case is dangerous.”
  • Pastor Fitzpatrick prayed over the next 90 seconds: that God would enable us to have a conscience that is dealt with by the cross… that our hearts might be cleansed… that we might know the power of the cross to deliver us from sin… that our aim would be godly, not just forgiveness, but with God’s purposes in mind…
  • He shared another section from Owen’s 6th volume on ‘temptation’ regarding spiritual pride
  • HIGHLIGHTS of the next 4-minute reading
  • Examples of biblical people whose zeal was a source of pride
  • Examples of preachers, scholars, believers whose diligence was a source of pride
  • Such things CAUSE one to ENTER INTO TEMPTATION AND TO SERVE THEIR OWN LUSTS
  • So, it is not only typically negative moral desires and conduct that can ensnare; but zealous study of the Bible, preaching, living of the Christian life, attending church… if it is done for personal glory and not God’s glory, can ensnare one
  • Owen stated that it is better for one to lie in the dust and express his/her vileness than to give into such lusts; may the Lord grant us deliverance from such things, Pastor Fitzpatrick prayed

John Owen – (1616-1683), Congregational theologian Born at Stadhampton, Oxfordshire, Owen was educated at Queen’s College, Oxford, where he studied classics and theology and was ordained. Because of the “high-church” innovations introduced by Archbishop William Laud, he left the university to be a chaplain to the family of a noble lord.

His first parish was at Fordham in Essex, to which he went while the nation was involved in civil war. Here he became convinced that the Congregational way was the scriptural form of church government. In his next charge, the parish of Coggeshall. in Essex, he acted both as the pastor of a gathered church and as the minister of the parish. This was possible because the parliament, at war with the king, had removed bishops.

In practice, this meant that the parishes could go their own way in worship and organization. Oliver Cromwell liked Owen and took him as his chaplain on his expeditions both to Ireland and Scotland (1649-1651). Owen’s fame was at its height from 1651 to 1660 when he played a prominent part in the religious, political, and academic life of the nation.

Appointed dean of Christ Church, Oxford, in 1651, he became also vice-chancellor of the university in 1652, a post he held for five years with great distinction and with a marked impartiality not often found in Puritan divines. This led him also to disagreement, even with Cromwell, over the latter’s assumption of the protectorship.

Owen retained his deanery until 1659.

Shortly after the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, he moved to London, where he was active in preaching and writing until his death.

He declined invitations to the ministry in Boston (1663) and the presidency of Harvard (1670) and chided New England Congregationalists for intolerance.

He turned aside also from high preferment when his influence was acknowledged by governmental attempts to persuade him to relinquish Nonconformity in favor of the established church.

His numerous works include The Display of Arminianism (1642); Eshcol, or Rules of Direction for the Walking of the Saints in Fellowship (1648), an exposition of Congregational principles; Saius Electorum, Sanguis Jesu (1648), another anti-Arminian polemic; Diatriba de Divina Justitia (1658), an attack on Socinianism; Of the Divine Original Authority of the Scriptures (1659); Theologoumena Pantodapa (1661), a history from creation to Reformation; Animadversions to Fiat Lux (1662), replying to a Roman Catholic treatise; Doctrine of Justification by Faith (1677); and Exercitationes on the Epistle to the Hebrews (1668-1684).
