Demonic invasion and willing spiritual possession: Genesis 6: 1-4: Paganism, Part 5

Dr. John MacArthur uses texts from the Old and New Testaments to show that Genesis 6: 1-4 is about man willingly opening himself to demon possession as is illustrated in part 2 of this series in the Gotthard Tunnel celebration.

The text from the ESV:

Gen 6:1 When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them,
Gen 6:2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose.
Gen 6:3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.”
Gen 6:4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

Dr. MacArthur’s exposition is crucial to understanding Gen 6:5 The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Furthermore, to understanding the most catastrophic judgment in the history of the world, the flood.

Moreover, all of the above is directly related to this series on Paganism in the western world.

The following sermon is 73 minutes in length, but very worthy of hearing if you want to understand judgment in the Bible and the state of affairs in our world.

The following sermon is included for those who want to hear what he had to say on the next 10 verses.

In conclusion, I have to say that I have never found a satisfactory explanation for verses 1-4 above, until now. I always found verse 5 very significant even though I did not have an understanding of the initial 4 verses. His exposition helped me understand God’s judgment, in general as it appears in the entire Bible, much better. I hope you also benefited by hearing Dr. MacArthur’s exposition.
