Why Is Repentance Necessary? – J C Ryle [3-minute excerpt]

The following 3-minute excerpt of an 80-minute Ryle Audio book about the necessity of repentance for heaven.

I excerpted this brief section of Ryle’s message because his words offer a unique perspective regarding getting to heaven.

I believe that his words will make it easier for you to accurately critique your own desires concerning heaven.

The following points are highlights from the 3-minute video excerpt [bracketed statements, emboldening and underscoring are mine]:

  • Not until the King is upon His throne [in your heart] will there be inward peace
  • Without repentance, there cannot be true happiness
  • Without repentance, you cannot be ready for heaven
  • Heaven is a prepared place [Consider from ESV: John 14:2  In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4  And you know the way to where I am going.”]
  • Those who go to heaven must be prepared people
  • Our hearts must be in tune with the business of heaven or else we would find it to be a miserable place in which to live
  • If our minds are not in harmony with the inhabitants of heaven, then we would soon find it to be an intolerable place in which to live
  • If you went to heaven with an unrepentant heart, then heaven would not be heaven to your soul
  • If you arrived in heaven with an unrepentant heart, then to which of the saints would you speak? By whose side would you sit down?
  • Surely, the music of the angels of God would not be sweet to the heart of him who could not tolerate the saints upon earth; and who never praised the Lamb for His redeeming love
  • Certainly, the company of the patriarchs, apostles and prophets would not be joyous to that person who would not read his Bible now, and does not care to know what the apostles and prophets wrote
  • No! No! There cannot be happiness in heaven if we get there with an unrepentant heart!
  • The fish is not happy out of water; the bird is not happy in a cage… they are out of their natural environment
  • Similarly, the unconverted, unrepentant person would not be happy if he got to heaven with a heart unchanged by the Holy Spirit – he would be out of his natural environment
  • Without a repentant heart, he is not suitable for the inheritance of the saints in light: Col 1:12
  • We must repent if we want to go to heaven
  • Please take to heart what I’ve just said, consider it thoroughly
  • You live in a world full of cheating, fraud and deception; don’t let anyone deceive you about the absolute necessity of repentance!

~ Audiobook Description ~

Except you repent, you will all likewise perish. – Luke 13:5

It is indifference that leaves people alone and allows them to go their own way. It is love, tender love, that warns them and raises the cry of alarm. The cry of “Fire! Fire!” at midnight might sometimes rudely, harshly, and unpleasantly startle a person out of his sleep, but who would complain if that cry was the means of saving his life? The words Except you repent, you will all likewise perish might at first seem stern and severe, but they are words of love, and they could be the means of delivering precious souls from hell.

  1. The nature of repentance: What is it?
  2. The necessity of repentance: Why is repentance needful?
  3. The encouragements to repentance: What is there to lead people to repent?
