What is your life? C H Spurgeon sermon

Spurgeon preached this sermon after the death of the Duke of Albany. The following is a statement from the initial moments of the sermon:

“Death is an orator whose solemn periods demand attention, especially when he speaks from the steps of the throne.”

The above was stated as he emphasized that when death occurs near us, we need to pay attention and think on its significance in light of our own lives….

In the following excerpt, Spurgeon’s words provide a an eternal perspective in a way that common sense quickly grasps. We need to hear such words, as it is so hard to let go of the things of this world and ensure that we are preparing for the desired eternal dwelling….

And whether you are in your 71 or 17, you do not know when it will be your time to end your sojourn here; so Spurgeon’s words apply to the youth as well as the aged.

The entire message is like the above excerpt. I have listened to the whole sermon several times in the past couple of weeks because this world still has too great a hold on me and I am 71, so I have a sense of urgency about getting an eternal perspective…. It is a valuable sermon for that.

Charles Haddon (C.H.) Spurgeon (June 19, 1834 January 31, 1892) was a British Reformed Baptist preacher who remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations, among whom he is still known as the “Prince of Preachers.” In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people, often up to 10 times a week at different places. His sermons have been translated into many languages. Spurgeon was the pastor of the New Park Street Chapel in London for 38 years. In 1857, he started a charity organization called Spurgeon’s which now works globally. He also founded Spurgeon’s College, which was named after him after his death.

Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, a commentary, books on prayer, a devotional, a magazine, and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Arguably, no other author, Christian or otherwise, has more material in print than C.H. Spurgeon.
