BIBLICAL SERMON ILLUSTRATED: Pastor Voddie Baucham – The World the Devil and the Flesh

The video of this post came from the YouTube site, Wise Disciple.

At his site, Nate Sala had titled the sermon, The DEVIL Is In Voddie Baucham’s MOST VIEWED Sermon | Pastor Reacts.

I changed Nate Sala’s title because I was using his sermon to illustrate ‘biblical preaching;’ Nate did a fine job of showing how Pastor Baucham accomplished that.

Part two of two in this mini-series illustrates ‘UN-biblical preaching’ via the preaching of Steven Furtick. That video is from the YouTube site of Pastor Michael Grant.

Nate Sala, is a former pastor and school teacher (of debate)…. In the following video, he examines Pastor Voddie Baucham’s most viewed sermon on YouTube: The World, The Flesh and the Devil.

My purpose in posting the following video is to help new Christians or confused Christians see what biblical preaching looks like. That is, what it consists of, its source, its goals, its purpose.

I recently got that question from a reader who must have been confused by all the false teachers on my site; and my posts about false churches…. By this post, I hope to help Christians who don’t have a clear idea of what constitutes biblical preaching.

Sermon Text today:

Ephesians 2:1  And you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2  in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience, among whom we all also formerly conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

Nate looked at Dr. Baucham’s sermon in terms of three questions that good pastors answer via preaching:

  • What does the Bible say?
  • What does the Bible mean?
  • How can we all live by that?    [‘Application’ portion of the sermon]

As Dr. Baucham’s sermon unfolds, Nate points out how Baucham is answering these questions for his listeners.

Listeners will also benefit from the content of Baucham’s sermon, it deals with the daily struggle of all born-again Christians.

A couple of points that Baucham made during his sermon that Nate did not comment on which need emphasized or explained:

***The world, flesh and Devil used to give us what we wanted, and that part of us still wants: when I heard Baucham say this I was reminded of John MacArthur’s statement, that the Prosperity preachers do this very thing. They tell their followers that God will bless them if they just plant a seed (giving the lying preacher seed money, or money which represents planting a seed) then God will give a harvest….

That is, prosperity preachers cause people to seek the things of the world: this is a FATAL error according to Jesus:

What does Jesus say in His word that YOU should seek if you are born again?

To deny self and serve Him:

Luke 9:23  And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.

[Other scriptures that convey that message:  Luk_14:26-27; Mat_10:38-39, Mat_16:22-25; Mar_8:34-38; Joh_12:25-26; Rom_8:13; Col_3:5; 2Ti_3:12 Tit_2:12  1Co_15:30-31]

A recent post, titled “Dying We Live” by Pastor James Boice explains Luke 9:23.

***Baucham mentions ‘Confessions’ Westminster and London (when mentioning the confession, he apparently read part of what the London confession said about the doctrine of sin):

A ‘confession of faith’ is a system of writings that explains the doctrines of the Bible.

For example: the doctrine of God; of scripture; of free will; of justification, of sin…. These doctrines are explained by taking scripture from the entire Bible and writing a definition to explain, define each doctrine.

In this post on the WCF, R C Sproul’s mentor, Dr. John Gerstner, provides an introduction to the WCF. Therein, he explains what it is about, how to use it, etc.

I recommend Nate’s YouTube site for developing discernment and for hearing examples of biblical teaching and un-biblical teaching.
