The Conditions of Power in Prayer – Charles Spurgeon

The videos of this post are from a C H Spurgeon sermon on prayer. The following excerpt is 14 minutes in length and covers Spurgeon’s 3rd sermon point. Therein, he provided illustrations of an earthly son and his father which apply to prayers to one’s heavenly Father.

The illustrations are excellent, in that they show what faith and lack thereof look like to God. Via Spurgeon’s illustrations, you will be able to see, much more clearly, your own lack of faith and how inappropriate, even silly, it is.

You may be wrongly assessing your own faith regarding prayer? If you listen to the excerpt, you will have information that will enable you to better see the quality of your own faith regarding prayer. That will, at least, give you some specifics to take to God in prayer.

The sermon text was: 1 John 3:22-24

1John 3:22  and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. 23  And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24  Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

The excerpt was also an illustration of the following text from James 1:

James 1:5  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7  For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8  he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Charles Haddon (C.H.) Spurgeon (June 19, 1834 January 31, 1892) was a British Reformed Baptist preacher who remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations, among whom he is still known as the “Prince of Preachers.” In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people, often up to 10 times a week at different places. His sermons have been translated into many languages. Spurgeon was the pastor of the New Park Street Chapel in London for 38 years. In 1857, he started a charity organization called Spurgeon’s which now works globally. He also founded Spurgeon’s College, which was named after him after his death.

Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, a commentary, books on prayer, a devotional, a magazine, and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Arguably, no other author, Christian or otherwise, has more material in print than C.H. Spurgeon.
