The Beauty of Jesus, Jeff Mayfield [John Owen]

When I heard Jeff Mayfield’s video this morning, part 2 of 2, it was the answer to a short prayer I had just prayed: for Christ to give me the appropriate feelings and desires to pursue Him, as I have been majorly distracted by the past several months of the election hype and have been neglecting my spiritual life.

Below, I provided the highlights of parts 1 and 2, as they are both about chapter two of John Owen’s book, Of Communion With God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Below the video links there is also a link to Owen’s book:

Part 1 of 2:

  • The beauty of Jesus, the excellencies and wonderfulness of Jesus
  • Jesus is excellent because He is able to save: He is fully God and Man in the same person
  • Since He is both divine and human, He is able to bridge the gap between us and God which sin created in our fellowship
  • His divine self has the necessary power to bear the wrath of God the Father against sin
  • He has in Himself the grace of communion with the Father and the Holy Spirit – He has all He needs to work salvation for us, and the power to do it
  • Colossians 1:19, In Jesus there is fullness of deity; He has the fullness of grace to provide all that we need because of His atoning works
  • When we come to realize our sin and the judgment we deserve, we will find Him to be beautiful and we will begin to love Him and delight in Him

Highlights of part 2 of 2: this sermon was part of the answer to my prayer today:

  • An excellency of Jesus is that He has the power to endear Himself to us that we might turn from lesser things and pursue Him
  • We have many needs (genuine needs, not wants): His life, His strength and salvation…
  • [I have recently become more aware of my helplessness to walk with the Lord; it was apparent in my daily activities, interests…I was obviously given the understanding to see my waywardness. I am very grateful that when I prayed, He was so quick to answer]
  • Those who despise Christ, do not know Him or His capabilities
  • Too many are chasing the wrong things: pleasure, profit, selfish aims – believing that fulfillment lay there
  • Compare what you do with what you already know of Jesus
  • Have your strivings, for those things you hold so dear, given you blessedness? Why then do you continue to spend your money for that which is not bread…which does not satisfy (Isaiah 55)
  • What have your idols given you (those things we pursue before God)?
  • Have they given peace, quietness, assurance of eternal blessedness?
  • Go to Him now and pray that He might reveal Himself to you – if / when He does, you will mourn for having neglecting Him
  • He fully satisfies the souls who truly know Him
  • Pray for the grace to believe and to see His beauty: by grace through faith you can come to know satisfaction of soul that has previously eluded you

I highly recommend subscribing to his site. He publishes 2 – 3 very short videos a week about very weighty topics for the Christian walk. His videos make weighty topics understandable.
