The Angel of the Lord, a scriptural conceptualization

In the following 25 minute video, Dr. Duane Spencer uses the whole of scripture to show the many ways that the Angel of the Lord interacts with His creation.

Below the video, I pasted in many of the scriptures cited by Dr. Spencer as he revealed what scripture indicates about the Person of the Angel of the Lord, via all the ways that scripture describes Him.

The fullest description of Him is found in the book of Ezekiel, chapter 1; it is rather lengthy and will be the last passage listed below.

Below are some of the scriptures Dr. Spencer cited in his presentation; I am only citing verses most relevant to the discussion, you may want to read surrounding verses. But first, I will note some of the words that Dr. Spencer said were synonymous with “The Angel of the Lord.”

God; Jehovah; Shekinah Glory; God of Bethel; Preincarnate Second member of the trinity, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The following are some symbols of Him, His heavenly throne, and the Shekinah Glory: Jacob’s ladder; cloud; fire; glory; and the Ram on the mount that Abraham substituted for Isaac.

Scriptures cited by Dr. Spencer:

Gen 28:12 As he slept, he dreamed of a stairway that reached from the earth up to heaven. And he saw the angels of God going up and down the stairway.
Gen 28:13 At the top of the stairway stood the LORD, and He said, “I am the LORD, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father, Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I am giving it to you and your descendants.

Exo 3:2 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn’t burn up.

Exo 13:21 The LORD went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and He provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night.

Exo 24:9 Then Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel climbed up the mountain. Exo 24:10 There they saw the God of Israel. Under His feet there seemed to be a surface of brilliant blue lapis lazuli, as clear as the sky itself. Exo 24:11 And though these nobles of Israel gazed upon God, He did not destroy them. In fact, they ate a covenant meal, eating and drinking in His presence!

Dan 7:9 I watched as thrones were put in place and the Ancient One sat down to judge. His clothing was as white as snow, His hair like purest wool. He sat on a fiery throne with wheels of blazing fire,

Dan 7:13 As my vision continued that night, I saw someone like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into His presence. Dan 7:14 He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey Him. His rule is eternal—it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.

[Although Dr. Spencer did not mention Mt. 25: 31-33, it connects well with Daniel 7:9 in that it mentions: Son of Man; glory (cloud); (heavenly) throne:  Mat 25:31 “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit upon His glorious throne.
Mat 25:32 All the nations will be gathered in His presence, and He will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. Mat 25:33 He will place the sheep at His right hand and the goats at His left.

Furthermore, note this KJV description of God found in Psalm 18: Psa 18:9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet. Psa 18:10 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.
Psa 18:11 He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
Psa 18:12 At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire. Psa 18:13 The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire. ]

Act 1:9 After saying this, He was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see Him. Act 1:10 As they strained to see Him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. Act 1:11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday He will return from heaven in the same way you saw Him go!”

Ezekiel 1: (also found in several other chapters in Ezekiel; furthermore, if you look for references to the cloud, the chariot of God, the wheels of fire…you will find it in many other places throughout the Bible.)

Eze 1:1 On July 31 of my thirtieth year, while I was with the Judean exiles beside the Kebar River in Babylon, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.
Eze 1:2 This happened during the fifth year of King Jehoiachin’s captivity.
Eze 1:3 (The LORD gave this message to Ezekiel son of Buzi, a priest, beside the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians, and he felt the hand of the LORD take hold of him.)
Eze 1:4 As I looked, I saw a great storm coming from the north, driving before it a huge cloud that flashed with lightning and shone with brilliant light. There was fire inside the cloud, and in the middle of the fire glowed something like gleaming amber.
Eze 1:5 From the center of the cloud came four living beings that looked human,
Eze 1:6 except that each had four faces and four wings.
Eze 1:7 Their legs were straight, and their feet had hooves like those of a calf and shone like burnished bronze.
Eze 1:8 Under each of their four wings I could see human hands. So each of the four beings had four faces and four wings.
Eze 1:9 The wings of each living being touched the wings of the beings beside it. Each one moved straight forward in any direction without turning around.
Eze 1:10 Each had a human face in the front, the face of a lion on the right side, the face of an ox on the left side, and the face of an eagle at the back.
Eze 1:11 Each had two pairs of outstretched wings—one pair stretched out to touch the wings of the living beings on either side of it, and the other pair covered its body.
Eze 1:12 They went in whatever direction the spirit chose, and they moved straight forward in any direction without turning around.
Eze 1:13 The living beings looked like bright coals of fire or brilliant torches, and lightning seemed to flash back and forth among them.
Eze 1:14 And the living beings darted to and fro like flashes of lightning.
Eze 1:15 As I looked at these beings, I saw four wheels touching the ground beside them, one wheel belonging to each.
Eze 1:16 The wheels sparkled as if made of beryl. All four wheels looked alike and were made the same; each wheel had a second wheel turning crosswise within it.
Eze 1:17 The beings could move in any of the four directions they faced, without turning as they moved.
Eze 1:18 The rims of the four wheels were tall and frightening, and they were covered with eyes all around.
Eze 1:19 When the living beings moved, the wheels moved with them. When they flew upward, the wheels went up, too.
Eze 1:20 The spirit of the living beings was in the wheels. So wherever the spirit went, the wheels and the living beings also went.
Eze 1:21 When the beings moved, the wheels moved. When the beings stopped, the wheels stopped. When the beings flew upward, the wheels rose up, for the spirit of the living beings was in the wheels.
Eze 1:22 Spread out above them was a surface like the sky, glittering like crystal.
Eze 1:23 Beneath this surface the wings of each living being stretched out to touch the others’ wings, and each had two wings covering its body.
Eze 1:24 As they flew, their wings sounded to me like waves crashing against the shore or like the voice of the Almighty or like the shouting of a mighty army. When they stopped, they let down their wings.
Eze 1:25 As they stood with wings lowered, a voice spoke from beyond the crystal surface above them.
Eze 1:26 Above this surface was something that looked like a throne made of blue lapis lazuli. And on this throne high above was a figure whose appearance resembled a man.
Eze 1:27 From what appeared to be His waist up, He looked like gleaming amber, flickering like a fire. And from His waist down, He looked like a burning flame, shining with splendor.
Eze 1:28 All around Him was a glowing halo, like a rainbow shining in the clouds on a rainy day. This is what the glory of the LORD looked like to me. When I saw it, I fell face down on the ground, and I heard someone’s voice speaking to me.

[An additional reference not noted by Dr. Spencer as another example of a reference to the Angel of the Lord:

Psa 104:2 You are dressed in a robe of light. You stretch out the starry curtain of the heavens; Psa 104:3 You lay out the rafters of Your home in the rain clouds. You make the clouds Your chariot; You ride upon the wings of the wind.
Psa 104:4 The winds are Your messengers; flames of fire are Your servants.

As you read through scripture, look for such references; often, only a few words convey the idea of the Angel of the Lord; His fiery throne; the fiery wheels; the Seraphim of the fiery chariot of God; clouds; fire….]
