Saving Faith – Counterfeits By A. W. Pink

The following points are highlights of the 8-minute excerpt on counterfeit experiences of saving faith, by A W Pink. The full 32-minute message is also included in this post.

The excerpt provides more specifics about counterfeit faith than were in the beginning of the reading; but the reading is worthy of hearing. I found it troubling, but it moved me to hear the last part more carefully; therefore, listening to the beginning may be what you need?

Highlight points:

There is a faith in Christ which does not save

Isaiah 44:20  He feeds on ashes; a deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, “Is there not a lie in my right hand?”

Obadiah 1:3  The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, “Who will bring me down to the ground?”

Luke 21:8  And he said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them.

Galatians 6:3  For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

One of Satan’s greatest deceits is to move professors to believe they have saving faith when they do not.

Where non-saving faith falls short:

  • Many are willing for Christ to save them from hell, but not from self
  • They want to retain their self-will and self-pleasing
  • You must be saved on His terms or not at all
  • He saves from sins power, polution and guilt
  • The very essence of sin is the determination to have “my” own way:
  • Isaiah 53:6  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all
  • Christ subdues the spirit of self-will and implants a desire to please Him
  • Many are never saved because they want to divide Christ; they are unwilling to subject themselves unto Christ as Lord
  • He is Lord of all; or not Lord at all
  • Luke 19:27  But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’”
  • Multitudes would be justified but not sanctified
  • [justification is an instantaneous operation by God the Father in His courtroom, wherein he deems one righteous via the atoning work and righteous life of His Son; as in Genesis 15:6 wherein Abraham was justified by his faith; sanctification is the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer wherein one is made righteous in a practical manner, occurring over time-the believer therein learns self-denial…Galatians 3 and Romans 4 and a study Bible would further clarify justification]
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:23  Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
  • Many have no desire to be sanctified, as they are too in love with pride and covetousness; to give it up would be like plucking out the right eye
  • The following are abhorred by them: mortification of sin; refinement via affliction; the purging of their lusts; the denial of self
  • They prefer Christ as their Priest, but not as their King
  • They believe self-denial to be legalism
  • Herod willingly heard John the Baptist, but refused to give up Herodiaus, Mark 6:20ff
  • If there is a reserve in your obedience, then you’re on the way to hell

“He that believeth, and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned” (Mar 16:16).

Arthur Walkington Pink (1886-1952) evangelist and Biblical scholar

Pink was born in Nottingham, England on April 1, 1886 and became a Christian in his early 20’s. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society (an occult gnostic group popular in England during that time), and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father’s patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, ‘there is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death,’ which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Desiring to grow in knowledge of the Bible, Pink immigrated to the United States to study at Moody Bible Institute. In 1916 he married Vera E. Russell, who was from Kentucky. However, he left after just two months for Colorado, then California, then Britain. From 1925 to 1928 he served in Australia, including as pastor of two congregations from 1926 to 1928, when he returned to England, and to the United States the following year. He eventually pastored churches Colorado, California, Kentucky and South Carolina.

In 1922 he started a monthly magazine entitled Studies in Scriptures which circulated among English-speaking Christians worldwide, though only to a relatively small circulation list of around 1,000.

In 1934 Pink returned to England, and within a few years turned his Christian service to writing books and pamphlets. Pink died in Stornoway, Scotland on July 15, 1952. The cause of death was anemia.

After Pink’s death, his works were republished by the Banner of Truth Trust and reached a much wider audience as a result. Biographer Iain Murray observes of Pink, “the widespread circulation of his writings after his death made him one of the most influential evangelical authors in the second half of the twentieth century.” His writing sparked a revival of expository preaching and focused readers’ hearts on biblical living.
