Psalm / Hymn Singalong for personal worship

The music videos in this post came from the YouTube site: Brian Cochran. I discovered the site Sunday as I looked for hymns from the Trinity Hymnal to post, because I was so moved by one that we sang in church Sunday. Afterwards, I began to sing along with Brian’s video and thought others might want to do the same as part of their personal worship.

The Trinity Hymnal and Trinity Psalter Hymnal are both available at Amazon.

Brian’s site information is at the end of this post. He has over 200 Psalms and Hymns recorded at his site. He is a pastor and did it for his congregation and anyone else wanting to worship via singing.

The purpose of this post is to provide music and lyrics for bolstering personal worship. I doubt if I’m the only worshiper who cannot carry a tune, even when I know the lyrics.

Herein, the lyrics are below the music video so that readers might sing along with Brian Cochran as he plays his guitar and sings. It is like being in church and singing with the congregation and the pianist.

Today, there is one Psalm and three hymns from the Trinity Psalter Hymnal.

Psalm 51 is about confessing sin; we are commanded to repent and believe the gospel….

Hymn 343 What Wondrous Love Is This, is about the wondrous love of Christ in dying for our sins.

Hymn 342 Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted, focuses on the afflictions He endured in His atoning work.

And Hymn 234 The God of Abraham Praise,  is about the God of Abraham, the one who made a covenant with Abraham which culminated in the atoning work of Christ. The God who did these things to redeem a people to himself: to learn more about the connection between Abraham and Christ, read the initial 5 chapters of Romans and Galatians and you will be instructed in the foundational importance of God’s covenant with Abraham in all of His redemptive work which was finished by His Son.

Psalm 51C 1-5:

1 God, be merciful to me,
on thy grace I rest my plea;
plenteous in compassion thou,
blot out my transgressions now;
wash me, make me pure within,
cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin.

2 My transgressions I confess,
grief and guilt my soul oppress;
I have sinned against thy grace
and provoked thee to thy face;
I confess thy judgment just,
speechless, I thy mercy trust.

3 I am evil, born in sin;
thou desirest truth within.
Thou alone my Savior art,
teach thy wisdom to my heart;
make me pure, thy grace bestow,
wash me whiter than the snow.

4 Broken, humbled to the dust
by thy wrath and judgment just,
let my contrite heart rejoice
and in gladness hear thy voice;
from my sins O hide thy face,
blot them out in boundless grace.

5 Gracious God, my heart renew,
make my spirit right and true;
cast me not away from thee,
let thy Spirit dwell in me;
thy salvation’s joy impart,
steadfast make my willing heart.

6 Sinners then shall learn from me
and return, O God, to thee;
Savior, all my guilt remove,
and my tongue shall sing thy love;
touch my silent lips, O Lord,
and my mouth shall praise accord.

7 Not the formal sacrifice
hath acceptance in thine eyes;
broken hearts are in thy sight
more than sacrificial rite;
contrite spirit, pleading cries,
thou, O God, wilt not despise.

8 Prosper Zion in thy grace
and her broken walls replace;
then our righteous sacrifice
shall delight thy holy eyes;
free-will off’rings, gladly made,
on thine altar shall be laid.

Hymn 343 What Wondrous Love Is This:

1 What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul,
what wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss
to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,
to bear the dreadful curse for my soul!

2 When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down,
when I was sinking down, sinking down;
when I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown,
Christ laid aside his crown for my soul, for my soul,
Christ laid aside his crown for my soul!

3 To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing,
to God and to the Lamb, I will sing;
to God and to the Lamb, who is the great I AM,
while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing,
while millions join the theme, I will sing!

4 And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,
and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on;
and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be,
and through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,
and through eternity I’ll sing on!

Hymn 342 Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted:

1 Stricken, smitten, and afflicted,
see him dying on the tree!
‘Tis the Christ by man rejected;
yes, my soul, ’tis he, ’tis he!
‘Tis the long-expected Prophet,
David’s Son, yet David’s Lord;
by his Son God now has spoken:
’tis the true and faithful Word.

2 Tell me, ye who hear him groaning,
was there ever grief like his?
Friends thro’ fear his cause disowning,
foes insulting his distress;
many hands were raised to wound him,
none would interpose to save;
but the deepest stroke that pierced him
was the stroke that Justice gave.

3 Ye who think of sin but lightly
nor suppose the evil great
here may view its nature rightly,
here its guilt may estimate.
Mark the sacrifice appointed,
see who bears the awful load;
’tis the Word, the Lord’s Anointed,
Son of Man and Son of God.

4 Here we have a firm foundation,
here the refuge of the lost;
Christ’s the Rock of our salvation,
his the name of which we boast.
Lamb of God, for sinners wounded,
sacrifice to cancel guilt!
None shall ever be confounded
who on him their hope have built.

Hymn 234 The God of Abraham Praise:

1 The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above,
Ancient of everlasting days and God of love.
Jehovah! Great I AM! by earth and heav’n confessed;
I bow and bless the sacred name, forever blest.

2 The God of Abraham praise, at whose supreme command
from earth I rise and seek the joys at his right hand.
I all on earth forsake, its wisdom, fame, and pow’r,
and him my only portion make, my shield and tow’r.

3 He by himself hath sworn, I on his oath depend;
I shall, on eagles’ wings upborne, to heav’n ascend.
I shall behold his face, I shall his pow’r adore,
and sing the wonders of his grace forevermore.

4 The goodly land I see, with peace and plenty blest,
a land of sacred liberty and endless rest.
There milk and honey flow, and oil and wine abound,
and trees of life forever grow, with mercy crowned.

5 There dwells the Lord our King, the Lord our Righteousness,
triumphant o’er the world and sin, the Prince of Peace.
On Zion’s sacred height his kingdom he maintains,
and glorious with his saints in light forever reigns.

6 The whole triumphant host gives thanks to God on high;
“Hail, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!” they ever cry.
Hail, Abraham’s God and mine! I join the heav’nly lays;
all might and majesty are thine, and endless praise.

ABOUT Brian Cochran from his YouTube site:

I am the pastor of Redeemer Reformation Church in Regina, SK. I originally started this channel to help my church members and others in the world during this COVID-19 pandemic to sing from home for private and family worship. The main content of this channel is recordings of Psalms and hymns from the Trinity Psalter Hymnal. I don’t have any professional equipment. Most of my videos were recorded on an iPhone 8 and with my old Fender FA-100 guitar I got from Costco :). I pray that this channel will be helpful to others in singing praises to our Triune God! “be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ…” (Ephesians 5:18-20).

NOTE: At Brian’s site, he doesn’t post lyrics too. To get the lyrics, I merely typed in the song title and Trinity Psalter Hymnal and chose lyrics without music at Trinity’s site.

For future personal worship singing, I purchased a Trinity Psalter Hymnal at Amazon ($45) at the following link; that enables me to go to Brian’s site and sing along by turning to the appropriate page:
