During the great awakening, many fell away from the faith after claiming to have been converted, Edwards spent time understanding the differences in the conversion experiences of the genuine and counterfeit groups.
He arrived at two groups of experiences he categorized as: Sure Signs of conversion; and Not Sure Signs of conversion.
