Divine Providence: John Calvin’s Institutes of The Christian Religion: Chapters 16 and 17

There are 3 videos below. The first is 38 minutes and is the groundwork for the following two videos on Providence. Videos 2 and 3 are each 27 minutes long and specifically treat the doctrine of Providence.

Each video opens with a list of contents wherein all the related aspects of the topic are enumerated.

It would probably be alright to just listen to 2 and 3, but if you have time, listening to video 1 is recommended so as to more fully understand the topic; at least, listen to the opening contents.

Understanding the doctrine of Providence aids immensely in walking with Christ, as it enables one to continue walking when he might be devastated by circumstances otherwise. It also enables one to rightly interpret the events of his life.

If you read your Bible regularly, then you will readily see Calvin’s very deep understanding of scripture; I am amazed at how the Puritans plucked these doctrines from the entirety of  God’s word.

Listening to Calvin’s Institutes (iphone, Audible) has enabled me to see much more in scripture. Furthermore, when I was battling cancer, my brother gave me a book titled: The Afflicted Man’s Companion, by pastor John Willison, (1680 – 1750), also enabled me to much more easily identify and to understand scriptures related to affliction (Amazon, for $15 or so).

Since our lives are full of afflictions, it is a very good thing to learn how to biblically interpret them.

STUDY RECOMMENDATIONS:

***Read through scripture yearly.

***Get a copy of Calvin’s Institutes and read a bit every Sunday or daily, for a deeper understanding of God’s word.
