Proverbs 1: 20-33 HIGHLIGHTS:
- Pastor Kyle read the passage
- Review: temptations of Lady Folly are exciting and attractive to the natural man and move him towards destruction
- Herein, Lady Wisdom speaks for the first time
- Below, the essence of her appeal; and the audience to which she speaks
- Lady Wisdom calls out to one from the noisy streets, the city gates…; the places of everyday life including places of employment, markets…, not just the temple
- She cries out that her hearers might ‘listen’
- She gives reproof, correction (likely a reference to chapters 10-31)
- Calling hearers to dig into God’s word, study, memorize…
- If YOU do not, then you will suffer the consequences of such negligence
- Having the wisdom found in scripture will keep one from going with Lady Folly, to destruction
- Lady Wisdom’s audience includes: simpletons, fools and scoffers
- These personality types are the consequence of their own affections / desires [loving things that God hates…]
- Proverbs classifies these under the general heading of ‘fools’ but they differ in degree
- Simpleton: this person is easily led astray, gullible, naïve and morally irresponsible
- If he does not make a choice to heed Lady Wisdom and pursue her, then he will become more hardened in the ways of folly and become a fool…
- The fool hates knowledge, learning, correction; he believes that he knows everything and is, because of such shortsighted perceptions, closed to receiving correction
- If the fool never experiences his own need for education, learning and growth, then he will harden into the worst state of foolishness, the scoffer
- The scoffer knows it all and also knows that everyone else knows nothing
- The scoffer causes trouble and sows division
- The scoffer rejects and ridicules God’s word; he delights in these things [his affections are opposite of those of the wise]
- The fundamental problem of the human condition is that we naturally turn away from God to destruction
- Lady Wisdom calls one to repent and to come to Christ; to embrace Him for forgiveness and salvation
