Why Is The Bible So Violent – Ask Pastor John
A question was asked Pastor John from Judges 19 and it was phrased in terms of the title above.
In the following 13-minute video, Pastor John provided three reasons for the violence in the Bible. [The following points are summarized highlights from the video; Piper’s words are used in part.] There two phrases in the book of Judges that provide a glimpse into the answer to this question, they are 1) in those days, there was no king in Israel; and 2) In those days, everyone did what was right in his own eyes. His big point under this heading was that the river of evil flowing from the human heart runs wild without the dam of civil authority to keep it from spilling over onto the entire earth….
If You’re A Christian, Are You Still A Sinner?
The 94-second video in this post uses scripture to explain how it is that Christians are still sinners.
The Lord’s Prayer – Lead Us Not Into Temptation – Pastor John MacArthur
In this post, Dr. MacArthur is explaining, from the Lord’s prayer, the phrase, Lead Us Not Into Temptation. His words also provide some general information that will be useful to all Christians.
John Calvin on Psalm 119:17, 18
The following 9-minute video is an excerpt of Calvin’s preaching on the third set of 8 verses in Psalm 119. In listening, you will hear much about God’s sovereignty, His covenant promises and the psalmist’s weakness. The verses covered are as follows, 17Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word. 18Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
1Jn 2:15 Do not love the world or the things in the world….
This post contains two 9-minute excerpts about the following 1 John texts. Pastor Jeff Mayfield preached the initial message and pastor Kevin DeYoung, the second. 1Jn 2:15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. If the Holy Spirit has shown you that you love the world too much, then the words of these men will be helpful.
Psa 18:16 He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters.
Psalm18:16 He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters. There can be little doubt but that David in this place is idealizing some of his own experiences; but that eye is very dim which cannot perceive in the Psalmist’s language something far beyond a description of his own immediate temporal danger and rescue. We have not exhausted the meaning of this magnificent hymn until we have seen in it a foreshadowing of the world’s redemption in Jesus Christ. In his description of this redemption, the writer compares Christ with Noah’s Ark, but the Ark of salvation which Christ represents is far better as he explained.
…Work Out Your Own Salvation With Fear And Trembling…. Philippians 2:12,13
While my friend and I were reading through Philippians yesterday, we looked at a commentary to better understand Philippians 2:12 and 13. The parts that we were interested in understanding better were: work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; and it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. If you’re not clear on the meaning of these statements, then your questions will be answered in this post.
Signs of False Prophets in The Church by Voddie Baucham
The following teaching by pastor Baucham explains the Christian duty of identifying, exposing and fleeing from false teachers. He used a lot of scripture to make those points. He also explained why so many people are deceived by false teachers. Do you know the characteristics of a false Christian teacher; of a biblical teacher? Do you know what to do if you encounter a false teacher? Baucham clarifies such things in his message.
1Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body….
When I did the recent miniseries, I forgot that the most powerful commentary I found on 1 Corinthians 6:9-20, was on verse 18, and not by MacArthur, but by Albert Barnes. Before pasting in Barnes’ comments, I provided the definition of the Greek word, ‘porneia’ which was translated ‘fornication’ by the KJV – look at the featured image to quickly get that definition.
