This post aims at providing a simple definition of idolatry so that you might more easily see what your trust is placed in, as that is the source of your comfort. Ask God to reveal these things to you and seek God’s enabling grace to turn from your idols to Him. Simply put, whatever you seek for comfort when you are in distress is your god. The true and living God is the only one Who can deliver from evil people, fearful thoughts and other things that cause distress.

“To stop our frantic getting, spending, and searching,” she says in “The Path of Loneliness, ” “and simply to look at the things God has made is to move one step away from despair. For God cares.” If anyone had cause for bitterness over the loss and pain she endured, it was Elliot. Yet she tells us that “it is possible both to accept and to endure loneliness [and by extension, all forms of suffering].” How do we do so? [Elisabeth] Elliot gives us the answer: “In circumstances for which there is no final answer in the world, we have two choices: accept them as God’s wise and loving choice for our blessing (this is called faith), or resent them as proof of His indifference, His carelessness, even His non-existence (this is unbelief).”

The following short passage from The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment, by Jeremiah Burroughs, is being posted to show two basic things about afflictions that God sends into the lives of Christians to fashion them to the image of His Son: 1), how one should respond and 2), what an affliction might look like. Burroughs stated more than once in his book that God routinely sends affliction into the lives of His children, Burroughs calls that “being in the school of Christ.”
