The following 3-minute video is from the YouTube site, Got Questions?
Scripture text: Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Pastor Nelson’s response covered the following highlight points:
- Why does God want us to be poor in spirit?
- Does the word, ‘poor’ in the above phrase have anything to do with money? No
- In the beatitudes, Jesus’ focused on spiritual realities
- He explained that being poor in spirit was to know one’s own spiritual bankruptcy before God
- Knowing that your sin has made you spiritually destitute and that you are helpless to deliver yourself from that state enables you to understand that you need a Savior
- ‘Kingdom of heaven’ is a reference to salvation
- Salvation is both eternity in heaven with God after death and the eternal quality of life with God before death
- Salvation is a gift: Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
- To receive this gift of God, one must realize his/her spiritual poverty and the inability of our own works to save us [from God’s wrath against sin]
