The Tenth Commandment – Pastor Patrick Hines Sermon

The following video is from the YouTube site, Christian Sermons and Audio Books, see links at end of post.

14-minute excerpt of Pastor Hine’s sermon on the tenth commandment; HIGHLIGHTS follow video:

During his sermon, Pastor Hines spent a lot of time talking about contentment; he also mentioned the work of Jeremiah Burroughs, The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment. I did 9 posts on that book, using 15-minute videos and highlight points. Post one and post 9 (a summary of posts 1-8) are linked just beneath the highlight points on the following excerpt.

Excerpt HIGHLIGHTS [bracketed statements, emboldening and underscoring are mine]:

The following highlight points are for the 14-minute excerpt, which is the last 14 minutes of Pastor Hines’ sermon.

  • God’s word states that if one walks humbly with the Lord, then He will give contentment to that one
  • Grumbling, complaining, coveting, discontentment are such a huge struggle for so many believers because we fixate on happiness
  • We have lied to ourselves, saying, “if circumstances were such and such, then I’d be happy”
  • Not true
  • If God answered all my prayers as I desired Him to answer them, then I would still need just a few more things before I could be happy
  • But, God says,
  • Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you
  • People boast in their wisdom, intellect, education, athletic ability, wealth, home, cars…
  • We say, I want those things first, then I will seek You
  • Jeremiah 9:23 Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24  but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the LORD”
  • Galatians 6:14 But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
  • Formerly, Paul had been an insolent man until he met the Lord on the Damascus road, Acts 9
  • The long list of things you put before the Lord, wherein you look for your elusive happiness, need crucified in Christ
  • Happiness / contentment will follow; the type that will transform all your circumstances
  • That doesn’t mean that you won’t experience pain and sorrow, because of your own sin and the sin of the world
  • Philippians 4:11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12  I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need
  • How can someone who has great sorrow really be content?
  • Because contentment is not the absence of sorrow or grief, it is the absence of coveting what someone else has
  • Contentment is also the absence of grieving and grumbling about things we don’t have: talents, bodies, possessions…
  • Contentment is the byproduct of really trusting in the sovereign decree and providence of God for one’s life [accepting your lot in life given you by God]
  • Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me
  • 4:13, above is about contentment in all circumstances
  • 4:13 is often wrongly used to speak of contests wherein the winner did so via the strength of Christ; it would be better cited when one suffered great defeat by a mistake… that person could state the verse and it would be more in context
  • Herein, it is stated by Paul of his endurance of the extremes in his providence from God, as in verse 12 above
  • That is, I can handle any situation via the One who redeemed me, died for me, strengthened me such that I might stand against these things
  • WHAT IS REQUIRED IN THE 10TH COMMANDMENT?
  • That all discontentment with our own estate; envying or grieving at the good of our neighbor; all inordinate affections to anything that our neighbors
  • = You will have no other God than me and you will be satisfied and content as I strengthen you
  • What a challenge!
  • That is the battle
  • God’s word states that contentment is something that we LEARN
  • It is learned in our struggles
  • During our moments of discontentment, we are being called to pray for the strength to live through these with our hearts firmly attached to our loving and gracious Savior
  • DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED IF THIS COMMANDMENT REVEALS LOTS OF IDOLS THAT YET NEED TO BE DEALT WITH IN YOUR LIFE!
  • The more we groan, learn, live…, we see that all we have is the Lord Jesus Christ
  • As we learn to be content, we can begin really enjoying God’s gifts in this world without those things being idols
  • Marriage, families, possessions, homes, talents…; can be huge blessings if they are kept in their proper place – not in the place of God
  • If, for example, one loves his family more than he loves God, then there will be discontentment below the surface
  • We are never meant to seek happiness and blessedness in themselves; we are to pursue a biblical knowledge of God and His ways with man; and of his glorious gospel in Christ
  • Happiness and blessedness, that is circumstance independent, will follow that quest
  • Augustine’s prayer, You have made us for Yourself and our hearts are restless till they find rest in You – he came to that place after seeking happiness for 32 years in chasing women, money, accomplishments, pride, theft…
  • We who are worthy of nothing but judgment for our sins are the very objects of the very infinite love of God in Christ
  • That is what makes the gospel, the good news, so good
  • Jesus loves, lives for, dies for the people who grumble and complain the whole way to heaven; they’re also frequently discontent and weak in their affections for Him
  • We are to have no other gods before the true God and we are always to be satisfied in Him says His law
  • That is why we need to be saved
  • ONLY Jesus lived such a life before His Father
  • Christ’s very righteousness; His perfect contentment in God, even as He went to the cross, is credited to our account – that’s why we can enter into heaven
  • All the believers in Christ, united to Him, experience this same love from God the Father as Christ does from His Father
  • So, no matter how much you struggle in the area of contentment, if you’re united to the Lord Jesus Christ, no charge will ever be brought against you
  • We can learn to be content through Christ who strengthens us
  • You will come to see, via you struggles, that we can only count on Jesus’ righteousness and His cross for salvation

From the church website:

We subscribe to the Westminster Standards as our doctrinal statement. It consists of the following documents:

The Westminster Confession of Faith The Westminster Larger Catechism The Westminster Shorter Catechism

We also believe that Christian Worship is to be regulated and defined by God’s Word, the Bible.

Our worship services are designed to please and honor the Triune God of the Bible. We place Scripture reading and the preaching of the word of God at the center of worship along with Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. These are God’s gifts to His church and ought to always be at the center of Christian worship. We are a congregation that loves to sing God’s praises, recite His Word back to Him, and actively engage in hearing and learning from God’s Word.

We embrace and promote a comprehensive Christian world and life view.

There is no area of life which is not under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It is to God and His law which all people, including governments and civil rulers, will answer. The Word of God embraces and informs the way we view marriage, the family, children, education, politics, worship, law, government, war, the church, missions, evangelism, and worship. In the world today there is a battle of opposing worldviews. There are basically only two positions: God’s Word and man’s ideas. We stand positively for Biblical truth and negatively against man’s ideas which are opposed to Biblical truth.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only hope for mankind.

Because all men fall short of obeying God’s law, all men everywhere are in need of divine grace and salvation from God. This salvation is found only in the Lord Jesus Christ who died for sinners, was buried, rose again, and is alive today seated at God the Father’s right hand.

We Worship God Together as Families.

We offer nursery during the morning worship service for newborns and infants but encourage people to keep as many of their children as they can with them for morning worship. The audio of the service is in the nursery via speakers.

All who profess faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and are members of an evangelical church are cordially invited to participate with us in the Lord’s Supper.
