The Necessity of Daily Bible Reading, J. R. Miller

The following is a 7 minute J. R. Miller devotional about Bible reading. He provided a lot of important information in a few moments.

Devotional highlights precede the video; these should enable you to know if you want to listen to the video.

  • Col 3:16 [ESV2011] Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
  • Prayer is less neglected in most people’s daily devotions than Bible reading
  • People pray for blessings but fail to realize that it is chiefly in the reading and meditating upon the word wherein God gives His best blessings
  • In His word, He reveals Himself, one might become familiar with His attributes and character; therefore, it is necessary to read and ponder the scriptures
  • God speaks with us via His word
  • No matter how well we know scripture, we need to read and ponder it daily to keep a fresh understanding of what He requires of us, lest we lower our standard of holy living – examples given
  • Rubenstein used to say that he could not omit his daily practice on the piano: if he  missed 3 days, then the public would notice; 2 days, his friends would notice; and 1 day, he would notice
  • There are parallels to Rubenstein’s experience in a Christian’s omitting his reading of God’s word
  • Christ won’t become great in our minds unless we ponder Him daily; He must become greater in our thoughts for our Christian maturity
  • Many of the blessings we seek in prayer can only be found in His word
  • We must know His commandments in order to keep them as Jesus calls us to in John 15
  • Ps 119:133 [KJV] Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.
  • Ps 119:105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
  • We must carry the lamp of God’s word like we’d carry a lantern which lights the next few steps; daily reading enables that
