Sermon text: 1 Corinthians 9:24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.
This post contains a 7-minute sermon excerpt and the entire sermon. The excerpt contains an exhortation by Spurgeon wherein he suggests that we should think of our race as though we were running from a swordsman that wants to slay us. To which he makes the following points:
- No one would have to exhort us to run
- One would run with all his might
- If we had eyes to see, then we’d know that hell pursues us; sin pursues us; evil wants to overtake us
- The avenger of death is pursuing us and we should run to the city of refuge with all our might
- The gates of that city stand open
- Christ is that city
- Many shall not enter that city
Highlights of the following, 50-minute sermon:
- Sermon focus: what is it that we are to run for, obtain?
- The mode of running
- Practical exhortations to obtain the prize
- THE FOLLOWING WILL NOT OBTAIN THE PRIZE
- Those who attend church to become respectable; to check it off the list of things that will build their reputation – the Pharisees did such and earned their reward, the praise of men only
- Others seek to get something: food, entertainment… they will get their reward
- Some seek to quiet a guilty conscience: for example, a business man who gets drunk a few times a week and earns his money dishonestly, quiets his conscience by attending church on Sunday; or a banker that swallows up widow’s houses during the week…
- What is the right spiritual goal?
- Heaven; eternal life; justification by faith; the pardon of sin; … everlasting glory
- Running for anything else will prove futile, soul-destroying
- Do not rest until you know that the Holy Spirit is at work within you
- Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God
- OTHERS WHO WILL NOT OBTAIN THE PRIZE
- Those who make NO profession of being a Christian. Such have no fear of God
- Do any wretches in the street profess being drunkards; being unchaste; being covetous wretches?
- It would be a greater fault to NOT profess the God who made them
- At the last judgment, these will be processed expediently by the Creator
- Their brazen shamelessness will be seen by the whole world as a sentence of destruction written upon their brow
- Those who have made a profession but have never started right: loitering there at the beginning;
- Those who get their Christianity quickly and keep it briefly [they might have signed a card and been told that they are now Christians…]
- They never felt the weight of their own sin; confessed their sin; renounced hope in all but the Lord Jesus Christ
- That is, before they repented of their sins; before the Holy Spirit wrought the work of conviction… in them they made a profession of faith
- The Holy Spirit’s plow did not produce conviction of sin and repentance; therefore, the soil of their heart is not ready to receive the holy seed of the word and produce a harvest
- Some runners cannot win because they carry too much weight – the weight of worldly concerns, interests, loves
- Matthew 6:28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble
- Psalm 37:3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart

Charles Haddon (C.H.) Spurgeon (June 19, 1834 January 31, 1892) was a British Reformed Baptist preacher who remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations, among whom he is still known as the “Prince of Preachers.” In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people, often up to 10 times a week at different places.
His sermons have been translated into many languages. Spurgeon was the pastor of the New Park Street Chapel in London for 38 years. In 1857, he started a charity organization called Spurgeon’s which now works globally. He also founded Spurgeon’s College, which was named after him after his death.
Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, a commentary, books on prayer, a devotional, a magazine, and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Arguably, no other author, Christian or otherwise, has more material in print than C.H. Spurgeon.
