The following 15 minute reading and discussion is of chapter one of Sibbes’ book, The Bruised Reed. I heard a discussion of Puritan Richard Sibbes on Family Radio this evening and thought it would be good to introduce readers to his precious little book.
I have read the book; the value of the book is mostly to help one get a biblical sense for how Christ actually deals with His children. He deals more gently than some of the pastors I have posted in this blog portray Him to do; but His instruction is still painful, especially for those who are oblivious to their sin.
The focus of the mp3 reading is Isaiah 42:1-3:

If you wish to listen to the remaining 13 sections, then click the link above and beside the picture of Richard Sibbes, there is a gray rectangular box with the words Series Sibbes 2 of 15; click the arrow after 15, and it will advance you to part 3.
If you bookmark the section you finish listening on each day, you could easily come back and pick up over the course of a week or so and you will have heard the entire, very worthy book.
TWO POSTS IN THIS BLOG THAT SUPPLEMENT RICHARD SIBBES BOOK:
There are two posts in this blog that will supplement Sibbes’ book: the first is on the sinner’s prayer, in that post there is a 5 stage process developed by the puritan Jonathan Edwards, it is called the struggle of faith. As I listened to chapter one of Sibbes’ book, I heard descriptions that fit well with Edwards findings about true Christian conversion.

The other post that supports Sibbes’ book and Edwards’ writings is the series in this blog about dealing with affliction. It is based on the book by puritan Jeremiah Burroughs – The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment.
I am on my 3rd or 4th listening of The Rare Jewel and I am finding it to be mostly about learning to receive affliction from God. This book is difficult at first, but it becomes easier to understand as one listens to it.
The following link is to the first part of The Rare Jewel…,it has links to the kindle version and to the audiobook that was used for the first several posts. I am not done with this series yet; I am listening through it via “Audible” from Amazon. The free audiobook version that I linked to post one does not cover the entire book. I hope to begin working on the series again soon.
