The epistle of Romans has much doctrine describing the blessings that believers experience via union with Christ. Pastor Hines clearly sets forth some of those in the following 12-minute podcast. This is the second of his podcasts on Romans and two more are available where I found this one, at the YouTube site, Christian Sermons and Audio Books.
I have them uploaded and plan to publish them this week, but if you want to hear them today, see the video-page link below the video in this post. If you go there, don’t forget to subscribe, it is a site that will grow you in your faith.
Sermon Highlights of Patrick Hines Romans 1:5-7 [ESV used below; all bracketed statements, emboldening and underscoring are mine]:
- Through Jesus we receive grace
- He was sent by God the Father to save us from our sins
- Paul received his apostleship through Jesus: one had to be directly appointed by Christ to be an apostle; those who claim apostleship today are not telling the truth
- “To bring about the obedience of faith:” obedience arises from faith; faith is not obedience as some believe
- Romans 1:6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;
- The real Christians in Rome had been effectually called. The called ones, ecclesia, the church, refers to them, as in Romans 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
- “Called” herein, is not the general call of the gospel as it went out; but those He foreknew (loved before the foundation of the world)
- [See Ephesians 1 for more on that topic]
- For example: Act 13:48 Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed
- [One pastor whose church I attended, when preaching through Acts, pointed out about a half-dozen such statements]
- Every Christian is a saint, set apart by God from the world; called to be holy ones, to glorify His grace, majesty, and patience by becoming more like Him
- Predestined, as in Romans 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.
- [The following link is to Romans 8:29 the Strong’s Lexicon at Bible Hub; the Greek meaning of each word of the verse is explained by him, in case you doubt what pastor Hines is saying: https://biblehub.com/strongs/romans/8-29.htm ]
- [If you do not have a good source of Bible study tools, then Bible Hub offers freely, many versions of the Bible; commentaries and dictionaries that you might understand the correct meaning of a given verse; you can be like the Bereans of Acts 17]
- Regarding Romans 8:29 above: part of what Christ does in every person who has been justified by faith, forgiven by His blood; Romans 3-10 explains these things in great detail
- “Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:” the peace we have with God through Jesus Christ is not merely a temporary cessation of hostility, it is a wholeness of loving fellowship in relationship that lasts through eternity
- Once a person repents and trusts in the finished work of Christ, that person is justified from God’s curse… adopted into God’s family for ever
- God the Father is the One who preserves them and gives them peace with His Son Jesus Christ
- Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ
- Romans 5:10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
- That is, before we were reconciled to God, we were God’s enemies
- We were enemies of God until we were effectually called, justified and forgiven; then the cause of God’s wrath [against us] was removed
- Romans 5:11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
- That is the whole point of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, it is not by our works, by anything we do, we simply rest upon the finished work of Christ; He has done it all
- [To do otherwise is idolatry. The Holy Spirit will show believers their idolatry as they read the word, hear the gospel preached…. Attached is the 5-part ‘struggle of faith’ that Jonathan Edwards arrived at after he’d interviewed many converts of the Great Awakening to discern what distinguished true from false converts; steps 2 and 3 involve learning to see what one is trusting in and shifting one’s trust to Christ’s work]
- That is, we’re saved from God the Father’s wrath against sin by God the Son; only God can save us from God
- Verse 7, to all who are beloved of God in Rome: that is, the true Christian members of the church in Rome
- Those who are ‘in Christ;’ who are no longer ‘in Adam’ [see Romans 5]
- Pastor Hines explains the underscored text below as how God the Father sees true believers
- Matthew 3:17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
- Those hidden in Christ are beloved by God the Father; Christ is their covenant surety, head and Savior
Jonathan Edwards’ 5-part ‘struggle of faith:’
1 Horror of being eternally lost; 2 sinner’s attempt to stop sinning via his will power; 3 realization that only God can save him from sin; 4 conviction: the sinner beginning to see that only God’s judgment is just; and 5 awakening to God with genuine religious affections.

From the church website:
We subscribe to the Westminster Standards as our doctrinal statement. It consists of the following documents:
The Westminster Confession of Faith
The Westminster Larger Catechism
The Westminster Shorter Catechism
We also believe that Christian Worship is to be regulated and defined by God’s Word, the Bible.
Our worship services are designed to please and honor the Triune God of the Bible. We place Scripture reading and the preaching of the word of God at the center of worship along with Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. These are God’s gifts to His church and ought to always be at the center of Christian worship. We are a congregation that loves to sing God’s praises, recite His Word back to Him, and actively engage in hearing and learning from God’s Word.
We embrace and promote a comprehensive Christian world and life view.
There is no area of life which is not under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It is to God and His law which all people, including governments and civil rulers, will answer. The Word of God embraces and informs the way we view marriage, the family, children, education, politics, worship, law, government, war, the church, missions, evangelism, and worship. In the world today there is a battle of opposing worldviews. There are basically only two positions: God’s Word and man’s ideas. We stand positively for Biblical truth and negatively against man’s ideas which are opposed to Biblical truth.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only hope for mankind.
Because all men fall short of obeying God’s law, all men everywhere are in need of divine grace and salvation from God. This salvation is found only in the Lord Jesus Christ who died for sinners, was buried, rose again, and is alive today seated at God the Father’s right hand.
We Worship God Together as Families.
We offer nursery during the morning worship service for newborns and infants but encourage people to keep as many of their children as they can with them for morning worship. The audio of the service is in the nursery via speakers. There is also a crying room with a video screen and audio of the sermon. We offer Sunday school classes for all ages, but worship together as families. We do not offer “children’s” church.
All who profess faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and are members of an evangelical church are cordially invited to participate with us in the Lord’s Supper.
