Martin Luther & Faith Alone / Imagine Believing We Don’t Need a Savior – Pastor Hines Podcast

The following 10-minute podcast is from the YouTube site, Christian Sermons and Audio Books.

This post contains a 10-minute podcast by Pastor Patrick Hines on the ‘righteousness of God.’ He frames it in terms of Martin Luther’s experience before he discovered this righteousness that God freely gives; how he discovered this righteousness; and how it impacted him.

In the middle of the podcast is a 3+ minute example of the typical thoughts a woman had on her way home from grocery shopping; the example typifies human sinfulness and helplessness to enter into heaven without the imputation of Christ, our Savior’s righteousness to us and our trusting in that instead of anything we might do.

I have to say, to those who think it is an easy thing to trust in Christ’s righteousness, that it is anything but easy. As, our conditioning has taught us to lean on ourselves. And some have made themselves into very righteous people (read Acts 7-9; and Philippians 3 for the righteous edifice that the apostle Paul had constructed for himself, which was destroyed by the risen Christ in a couple of seconds on the Damascus road).

I have heard Pastor Paul Washer address this matter by saying such things as, the Holy Spirit will be crushing your idols one by one. [Such as happened to the apostle Paul.]

Jesus actually declared, in the beatitudes, that the very first thing His true kingdom citizens learn is poverty of spirit. That means, they learn that they are bankrupt spiritually and that causes them to mourn their sinfulness, they become meek and hunger and thirst for Christ’s righteousness, found in His word and partaking of other means of grace such as prayer, hearing biblical preaching….

Podcast HIGHLIGHTS [bracketed statements, emboldening and underscoring are mine]:

  • 1517 Martin Luther (ML) tacked his 95 theses on the church door
  • That list ignited the greatest revival of biblical Christianity since the apostles
  • However, ML did not experience his theological breakthrough until sometime later
  • That occurred as he studied various parts of scripture: Romans, Galatians, Psalms…
  • ML lacked assurance and feared damnation until that breakthrough
  • In John 16:8-11, the Holy Spirit is said to bring conviction of sin
  • If the Spirit has not done that for you, then you will be content to be involved in religious rites… and to think that God will grant you access to heaven via your righteousness
  • ML realized that the law was never intended to be a way of salvation because we are too sinful
  • He recognized the following verses were key verses and the theme of the book of Romans:
  • Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17  For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
  • He realized that ‘the righteousness of God’ was a phrase that described the ‘gift’ of righteousness imputed by God to those who repent and trust in Christ because they have discovered that they NEED a Savior
  • A problem today, in witnessing the gospel, is that most think they don’t need a Savior [that they are sufficiently good to enter into heaven on their own…; that they have not been shown their helplessness to become righteous on their own…]
  • Pastor Hines reads a 3-4 minute example from an essay about the thoughts of a woman driving from the grocery store to home – that example makes it very clear that all humans need a Savior, because God’s standard is sinless perfection
  • [Matthew 5:48  You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.]
  • After the example:
  • The work of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life, revealing his/her sin to them, is required; otherwise, we go on thinking we are ‘good people’
  • [If you think you’re alright without a Savior, that is a red flag that you’re in spiritual danger]
  • Romans 5:1  Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ 2  Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God
  • Acts 17:30  The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31  because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”  [Pastor Hines mentioned the judgment of God but not the above scripture]
  • God sent His Son into the world to atone for our sin and to live a righteous life that could be imputed to us, because we cannot be sufficiently righteous to enter into heaven otherwise
  • ML finally saw that what God requires of us via His law, He gives to us via His gospel; he finally had peace from his spiritual unrest
  • The righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ is the only righteousness that has sufficient merit to access heaven

Luther & Faith Alone – Imagine Believing We Don’t Need a Savior – Pastor Patrick Hines Podcast

From the church website:

We subscribe to the Westminster Standards as our doctrinal statement. It consists of the following documents: The Westminster Confession of Faith The Westminster Larger Catechism The Westminster Shorter Catechism

We also believe that Christian Worship is to be regulated and defined by God’s Word, the Bible.

Our worship services are designed to please and honor the Triune God of the Bible. We place Scripture reading and the preaching of the word of God at the center of worship along with Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. These are God’s gifts to His church and ought to always be at the center of Christian worship. We are a congregation that loves to sing God’s praises, recite His Word back to Him, and actively engage in hearing and learning from God’s Word.

We embrace and promote a comprehensive Christian world and life view.

There is no area of life which is not under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It is to God and His law which all people, including governments and civil rulers, will answer. The Word of God embraces and informs the way we view marriage, the family, children, education, politics, worship, law, government, war, the church, missions, evangelism, and worship. In the world today there is a battle of opposing worldviews. There are basically only two positions: God’s Word and man’s ideas. We stand positively for Biblical truth and negatively against man’s ideas which are opposed to Biblical truth.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only hope for mankind.

Because all men fall short of obeying God’s law, all men everywhere are in need of divine grace and salvation from God. This salvation is found only in the Lord Jesus Christ who died for sinners, was buried, rose again, and is alive today seated at God the Father’s right hand.

We Worship God Together as Families.

We offer nursery during the morning worship service for newborns and infants but encourage people to keep as many of their children as they can with them for morning worship. The audio of the service is in the nursery via speakers. There is also a crying room with a video screen and audio of the sermon. We offer Sunday school classes for all ages, but worship together as families. We do not offer “children’s” church.

All who profess faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and are members of an evangelical church are cordially invited to participate with us in the Lord’s Supper.
