Dr. Mayfield explains a Jonathan Edwards sermon on Matthew 16:17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
Dr. Mayfield made the following points and supported them with useful words:
- We need God’s word and God’s illumination to know Him
- Since knowing Him is the greatest kind of knowledge in this world; God has required that He be the one to give such knowledge
Sub points to # 2 include:
- No one has to be a genius, therefore all whom God has decided to reveal Himself to will know Him
- Has He revealed Himself to You?
- Such a worthy goal, as knowing God is, should be sought earnestly
- One will then know joy
- One will then know what it is to delight in God [as in Psalm 37]
The above and more is set forth by Dr. Mayfield in the course of the two brief videos below: the first is 7 minutes; the second, 5.5 minutes: (If you only have time for one video, view the second one)
