Dr. Ramsey’s sermon speaks of the blessings that born-again believers receive because of Christ’s death on the cross.
Despised and Rejected, a sermon by Pastor Patrick Ramsey, 3-28-21
25 minute mp4 sermon follows sermon highlights:
- Jesus was crucified on good Friday by lawless men
- Why do we call it good? Because of the benefits it afforded us
- Matthew recorded the facts in chapter 27; these facts have been interpreted differently by everyone: for example, the Bible tells us how the Scribes and Pharisees interpreted them; we know how our unbelieving acquaintances interpret them…that is, everyone has an opinion
- The only opinion that matters is God’s, it is recorded in the scriptures and we must ascertain it from the study of His word: the Old Testament and the epistles
- The cross is foundational to our salvation; hence, Good Friday
- How Jesus was despised and rejected: 1) betrayed by one of the 12, Judas (listen to sermon for elaboration); 2), His disciples abandoned Him; 3), Peter denied Him; 4), the crowd rejected Him; 5), He was mocked by the soldiers; 6), He was ridiculed by passersby; 7), the chief priests and Scribes mocked / hated Him; 8), the robbers on the two other crosses mocked Him (one turned to Him in the end); and lastly, 9) His Father forsook Him
- People hated Jesus as though He were a Hitler type figure
- In the Bible, darkness is often associated with judgment, there was 3 hours of darkness during the time Jesus was forsaken by His Father – He was experiencing hell, dying for sin
- No one came to Jesus’ rescue
- The centurion, who had likely seen many crucifixions, believed Jesus’ crucifixion to very different, as was the day and Jesus – he said truly, this is the Son of God
- The true interpretation of the cross: Jesus is the Son of God, incarnate; the Messiah, the Christ, the Savior of the world, who willingly went to the cross
- He was not a victim or a martyr
- He came to be despised and rejected in order to deliver us from sin
- So we would not be despised and rejected by God on judgment day, for our sin
- He came to redeem us from the curse, by being a curse for us
- The temptation to quit saving the world and turn from the cross was real to the end
- People taunted Him, that He should come down; that He should ask His Father to deliver Him if God truly was His Father…
- He resisted, as He did in the beginning of His ministry when Satan tempted Him in Matthew 4
- It has been said that He was held on the cross by cords of redeeming love, and constraints of divine design
- Good Friday was good because of the fruit that abounds to our account
- If you would benefit from His atoning work, you must be UNITED to Him by FAITH
