Christian Hymns: Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness; The Church’s One Foundation; Guitarist Brian Cochran

In church, the other day, one of the pastor’s selections for us was the first hymn above. I made a note for myself to find a copy of it on YouTube and post it, because its lyrics are so filled with Christian doctrines. Singing such songs is like preaching a sermon to oneself.

I found a guitarist who had recorded a lot of hymns from the Trinity Psalter on his YouTube site: Brian Cochran, links below videos.

Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness

Lyrics are posted below each video so that you might sing along and experience the blessing of these wonderful truths:

Lyrics:

1 Jesus, thy blood and righteousness
my beauty are, my glorious dress;
‘midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed,
with joy shall I lift up my head.

2 Bold shall I stand in thy great day;
for who aught to my charge shall lay?
fully absolved through these I am
from sin and fear, from guilt and shame.

3 When from the dust of death I rise
to claim my mansion in the skies,
ev’n then this shall be all my plea,
Jesus hath lived, hath died, for me.

4 Jesus, be endless praise to thee,
whose boundless mercy hath for me –
for me a full atonement made,
an everlasting ransom paid.

5 O let the dead now hear thy voice;
now bid thy banished ones rejoice;
their beauty this, their glorious dress,
Jesus, thy blood and righteousness.

The Church’s One Foundation:

1 The church’s one foundation
is Jesus Christ, her Lord;
she is his new creation
by water and the Word:
from heav’n he came and sought her
to be his holy bride;
with his own blood he bought her,
and for her life he died.

2 Elect from ev’ry nation,
yet one o’er all the earth,
her charter of salvation
one Lord, one faith, one birth;
one holy name she blesses,
partakes one holy food,
and to one hope she presses,
with ev’ry grace endued.

3 Though with a scornful wonder
men see her sore oppressed,
by schisms rent asunder,
by heresies distressed,
yet saints their watch are keeping,
their cry goes up, “How long?”
And soon the night of weeping
shall be the morn of song.

4 The church shall never perish!
Her dear Lord to defend,
to guide, sustain, and cherish,
is with her to the end;
though there be those that hate her,
and false sons in her pale,
against or foe or traitor
she ever shall prevail.

5 ‘Mid toil and tribulation,
and tumult of her war,
she waits the consummation
of peace forevermore;
till with the vision glorious
her longing eyes are blest,
and the great church victorious
shall be the church at rest.

6 Yet she on earth hath union
with God the Three in One,
and mystic sweet communion
with those whose rest is won:
O happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we,
like them, the meek and lowly,
on high may dwell with thee.

ABOUT Brian Cochran from his YouTube site:

I am the pastor of Redeemer Reformation Church in Regina, SK. I originally started this channel to help my church members and others in the world during this COVID-19 pandemic to sing from home for private and family worship. The main content of this channel is recordings of Psalms and hymns from the Trinity Psalter Hymnal. I don’t have any professional equipment. Most of my videos were recorded on an iPhone 8 and with my old Fender FA-100 guitar I got from Costco :). I pray that this channel will be helpful to others in singing praises to our Triune God! “be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ…” (Ephesians 5:18-20).

Features of the Trinity Psalter Hymnal:

All 150 Psalms

All 150 Psalms are included in 278 psalm renditions. Each biblical psalm is represented in full, with alternate versions for many of the psalms. Psalm 119 is the exception, with this psalm naturally broken into 22 sections.

Each psalm contains a rendition that closely follows the ESV Bible text, with many psalms also including partial or paraphrase versions

Creeds & Confessions

Also featured together for the first time in a hymnal are the Three Forms of Unity (the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Canons of Dort) and the Westminster Standards (the Confession of Faith, the Larger Catechism, and the Shorter Catechism). Three ecumenical creeds are also included: Apostle’s Creed, Nicene Creed, Athanasian Creed.

428 Hymns

In addition, the TPH contains 428 rich hymns from all ages of the church, organized topically. These hymns range from ancient to modern, and are biblical and Reformed in content.

Eight Indexes

Eight comprehensive indexes help point you to what you need. These include Scripture, topical, and musical indexes.

About the Hymnal

The 21st century has seen a number of celebrations marking important anniversaries and milestones since the beginning of the Protestant Reformation on October 31, 1517. There are many reasons for God’s people to celebrate such events, especially the church’s rediscovery of the gospel of God’s amazing grace through faith alone in Christ alone. Some, however, have lamented the Reformation, noting that it resulted in so many denominations, federations, associations, and independent churches that one might wonder whether Christ’s prayer for unity in John 17 could ever be realized.
