The following 13-minute video is from the YouTube channel, The Gospel of Christ.
Video HIGHLIGHT POINTS [bracketed statements, emboldening and underscoring are mine]:
- Is your church going ‘woke?’
- Video opens with many images of people standing for and against woke-ism
- Pastor Voddie Baucham talks for a moment on the issue, talking about foundational points
- He categorically rejects what proponents of CRT call systematic racism
- He talked about legislation…and stated that there is no law prohibiting a Black person from… what they mean when they say ‘laws’ is inequality, inequity… which they call racism
- Vlogger used an article written by CHANTAL MONIQUE DUSON, Racial Unity Advocate (a Black woman), titled “5 Signs Your Church May Be Going Woke” [article linked below]
- Her response was to the many emails she received from people concerned with this matter; she responded to the most common typical questions
- Video showed a clip of pastor Matt Chandler saying “White pastors, I need to chat with you”
- Letter-writer’s responses to such pastoral wokeness
- To be ‘woke’ currently means that one is aware and attentive to important facts and issues, especially issues of racism and social justice
- Biblical responses mentioned in passing
- CRT advocates push those who subscribe to it to accept an entire secular framework
- This is problematic for the Christian because it involves performing a list of works in order to become and to remain ‘woke’
- Not submitting usually results in shaming and exclusion
- Many pastors were not familiar with the social justice movement and CRT such that they could brief their constituents on what it is and how to interact with those propagating it
- 5 signs to look for to ascertain whether your church is becoming ‘woke’
- 1 – Pastor or leadership team describes White people as being inherently racist or quotes from a prominent source that does
- Voddie Baucham talking to an unknown interviewer
- Another phrase of SJ advocates, ‘silence is racism:’ it indicates that if you are not helping to dismantle the racist system, then you are a racist
- 2 – Your pastor agrees with the idea of his congregants engaging in lament and repentance because of their own white privilege
- Film clip of Max Lucado doing that last year
- The vlogger noted the following passage as a biblical example of repentance: Matthew 5:23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
- The thought that Whites hold the guilt of previous generations for racism has prompted some pastors and leaders to call for a corporate repentance for “America’s original sin, racism”
- Many apparently do not know that repentance is more than saying “I’m sorry”
- Clip of a church full of people lamenting / repenting, led by a female pastor, apparently
- Definition of repentance, per the Bible: having an understanding of ones sin, acknowledging it to God and turning from it to God
- 3 – You are encouraged to read the new canon that you might better understand your own participation in racism: the following books are recommended by CRT advocates: White Fragility; Are You Woke?; How to be an Anti-racist; Be the Bridge or The Color of Compromise
- 4 – Your pastor / leadership, adhere to BLM ideology, use their lingo… they might also recommend that you attend a BLM protest, donate money, etc
- 5 – CRT terminology is used by leadership and you are expected to understand and believe it, change your worldview…
- CRT TERMS that you will be required to know if your church has gone woke:
- A – White Fragility: a posture of defensiveness, anxiety and anger shown by Whites in response to discussions of racism
- B – Whiteness: A set of normative privileges granted to White-skinned people which is invisible to those possessing that privilege
- C – Racism: Racial prejudice plus institutional power
- D – Anti-racism: Commitment to activity that dismantles systems of racism
- Neil Shenby’s Anti-racism glossary, explains such terms succinctly
- Pastors should refrain from using non-biblical terms deriving from contemporary culture; they should define terms
- Don’t overreact if you believe your pastor is becoming woke.
- Ask questions to get clarity, for example: I heard you use the term ‘white privilege,’ how would you support that idea from scripture?
- If you believe some of your church leadership is becoming woke, then question them directly, don’t gossip…
- Ascertain whether such leadership understands what they are propogating
- E – Offer resources: Center for Biblical Unity, Dr. Neil Shenvey; Edwin Ramirez, Jamal Bandy, Dr. Voddie Baucham (his book Fault Lines); Dr Owen
- We must be able to recognize CRT and to have conversations as needed
- Be prepared to defend the faith
