The following video is from the YouTube site, The Word at Work. This is part 2 of a 12-part series about Proverbs 1-9.
Today, 1:8-19
Highlights:
- This is the first lecture from the Father
- The nature of wisdom: initially it looks difficult and may feel difficult, as learning and humility are involved; but it leads to honor and success…
- On the other hand, folly initially looks enjoyable and easy, but in the end, it gives destruction
- In this text, folly offers material gain with little effort
- Also, herein, folly is offered with the above gain in addition to comradery, excitement, ease
- The boomerang effect of folly is that it causes destruction in the end
- The moral of the story: those greedy for unjust gain, fall into temptation and reap a bitter reward in the end
- Proverbs frequently highlights folly in relation to money and sexuality
- In verses 8 and 9, Proverbs holds out the goodness of social honor, praise and attractiveness in your life; folly wrongly appears attractive in that it offers a short cut
- Proverbs indicates that it is wisdom to do things God’s way via discipline, teaching… of the authority figures around us
This, the first of the father’s lectures, introduces us to some of the crucial distinctions between wisdom and folly.
Wisdom comes to us in the form of teaching and instruction, and so it may not look particularly appealing. However, it yields a harvest of social honour and moral beauty. Folly, contrastingly, looks enticing but in the end yields destruction.
This is the boomerang effect of folly: when we act foolishly, in the end we hurt ourselves. Fools lie in wait for their own blood.
