Baptismal Regeneration Is a Deceptive Hoax – Mike Gendron – Proclaiming the Gospel to Roman Catholics

Mike Gendron from his newsletter

The following article is Mike Gendron’s monthly Newsletter. The topic of BAPTISMAL REGENERATION is the Roman Catholic version of Justification. The biblical doctrine of justification is foundational to the church and to salvation. It is the most fundamental doctrine.

I emboldened some of the sentences of Mike’s Newsletter.

The Protestant Reformation was fought over this doctrine.

At the end of Mike Gendron’s material, I pasted in scriptures from Romans and Galatians that address the topic of justification / regeneration. No matter what sect you belong to, the scripture should matter to you, if you are someone who casts aside Gendron’s words below, that would be too bad; but if you cast aside the words of scripture, you are in danger.

The Popes are men; they have often blatantly contradicted one another down through the centuries; keep that in mind as you read. Also, consider the following words spoken by Jesus:

Matthew 15:7  “You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: 8  ‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 9  ‘BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE COMMANDS OF MEN.’”  [LSB]

Baptismal Regeneration Is a Deceptive Hoax

Of all the deceptive doctrines and dogmas of Roman Catholicism, there is one that is more paralyzing and potentially fatal than the others. It is the falsification of spiritual benefits that are claimed to be received by the sacrament of water baptism. This solemn and dreadful distortion of biblical teaching is paralyzing for Catholics because it discourages them from examining their dead, spurious and misplaced faith.

The Falsification of Spiritual Blessings

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), there are many spiritual blessings that are said to flow out of water baptism. Rome declares it to be the sacrament of regeneration, which causes people to be freed from sin and reborn as sons of God (CCC, 1213). By water baptism, all sins are forgiven, as well as all punishment for sin. Nothing remains in those who have been reborn that would impede their entry into the Kingdom of God (CCC, 1263). This horrible deception continues: “Baptism not only purifies from all sins, but also makes the neophyte a new creature, an adopted son of God, who has become a partaker of the divine nature, member of Christ, co-heir with him, and a temple of the Holy Spirit” (CCC, 1265). But that is not all! Rome declares “Justification is conferred in Baptism…It conforms us to the righteousness of God” (CCC, 1992). Catholics need to know that absolutely none of these spiritual blessings are received as a result of water baptism. The only way they will know they have been woefully deceived is when they are confronted with God’s Word. Only then will the truth set them free from religious deception.

Scripture Exposes Rome’s Deceptive Teaching

Only when we examine Catholic teaching through the lens of God’s inspired, infallible Word can we know how cunningly deceptive it is. Scripture is used for reproof, that is, to expose and to unmask the fatal errors of every false religion (2 Tim. 3:16). Rome’s deceitful teachings on water baptism violate and blaspheme the sovereign regenerating work of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5). Regeneration results in the new birth, being born again as a child of God. It is solely and completely the work of God. Catholics need to know that man has absolutely nothing to do with the new birth. God’s Word declares, children of God “were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12-13). Our rebirth is necessary because fallen man is spiritually “dead in trespasses and sins” until he is “made alive” (regenerated) by God (Eph. 2:4-5).

The Timing and Purpose of Water Baptism

Water baptism is an act of obedience and a public profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ after one has been born again of the Spirit. There is irrefutable evidence for this in Scripture. When the Gentiles heard and believed the Gospel, Peter declared, “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did.” Then “he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ” (Acts 10:47-48). In spite of this clear teaching from God’s Word, most Catholics are baptized as infants before they can have faith in anything. Rome attempts to overcome this divine mandate of personal faith by declaring it is the faith of the infant’s parents that validates the baptism. They need to know that God does not have any grandchildren, only children of faith.

Water Baptism Cannot Cause Spiritual Rebirth

Catholics insist their teaching of spiritual rebirth through water baptism is supported by the words of Jesus: “born of water and of the Spirit” (John 3:5). Yet, there are two reasons why this cannot be true. First, Christian baptism is not mentioned here. In fact, the “sacrament of baptism” had not even been introduced yet. Second, Jesus was explaining that the new birth was entirely a spiritual one, which, like the wind, no man can control. In several places in the Bible, “water” is used figuratively as the Spirit of God (John 4:14, 7:37). Such a rendering is in full accord with Ezekiel 36:25-27, where the water is a metaphor for the Holy Spirit causing spiritual cleansing and rebirth. The apostle Paul also referred to this cleansing at the moment of salvation. “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5). It is no wonder why Jesus chided Nicodemus for not knowing this when He asked, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things?” (John 3:10).

Only God and His Word Can Cause Spiritual Life

Just as there are two necessary components to produce physical life, the sperm and the egg, there are two necessary agents to cause spiritual life, the Word of God and the Spirit of God. Our Lord said, “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit” (John 3:8). Peter explained, “you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God” (1 Pet. 1:23). Finally, James wrote: “in the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth” (Jas. 1:18). Our Sovereign Lord, not man, is the sole source of this radical transformation from spiritual death to spiritual life (Eph. 2:1, 8). It is not the priest and his water; it is the Spirit of God and the Word of God.

How can we make Catholics aware of this deceptive hoax? Let us speak the truth in love to those who do not know they are being deceived about life’s most important issues. Let us pray for God to open their hearts to receive His Word with humility, conviction, repentance and true saving faith.

Do Not Be Deceived About “The Chosen”

We warned many evangelical Christians about the Papacy’s plot to solidify its ecumenical agenda through Hollywood-backed movies like The Chosen but very few listened. Now many are being deceived by the prayer app Hallow that encourages prayers to Mary and guardian angels. We need to expose these evil deeds of darkness that dishonor Christ and His Word. Please watch here to understand why “The Chosen” is dangerous. If you are still unconvinced, consider these 14 reasons to avoid watching the series.

Letters to Equip and Encourage the Saints

Mike, You claim to be an ex-Catholic, but it clear to me that you are either self delusional, never really understood the faith, or are a liar. It is true that within the 2000 year history of the Catholic church, corruption of clergy and various heresies have arisen. Current events suggest we are in one of the times of corruption. Various articles and books describe an infiltration by satanically inspired forces of the church even at the highest levels. While these corruptions among the shepherds may present the sheep with a greater burden, they provide no excuse for Apostasy. Yet, the heresies and distortions spoken by you are so numerous it is difficult to determine where to start. We can atone for sin in this life or in purgatory, but we will not be permitted into heaven until we are perfectly sanctified. I pray you will stop your lies about the Catholic Church. You are leading others on the wrong path and thereby increasing your punishment in hell. J.D., Internet

J.D., No man can ever DO what Christ has DONE. You can never atone for your sin because your sin incurs an eternal sin debt that you can never pay off. I encourage you to trust Christ alone who is the way for those who are lost, the truth for those who are deceived and the life for those who are dead in sin (John 14:6).

Sir, Having watched your YouTube messages, I need to inform you that you are greatly distorting Catholic Church history and official Catholic teachings. The Church is the pillar and foundation of truth and, unless you repent, you will stand in front of Jesus on Judgement Day and give an account of all the lies, distortions and condemnations you have made against His Church (Matthew 12:36). I pray you come off your worldly pedestal and repent. George M., Internet

George, The church Jesus and His apostles established looks nothing like the Catholic Church. The Book of Acts gives a clear history of the first century church and yet no where can you find priests offering sacrifices for sins, indulgences, purgatory, infallible popes, rosaries, salvation dispensed through sacraments, scapulars, holy water, crucifixes or statues. How can the Catholic Church be the pillar and foundation of truth when it does not conform to the blue print Christ established for His Church?

Mike, You are in a battle that can be overwhelming at times because the evil one doesn’t want your message to get out. I will pray for you. Thanks for standing firm all these years and for giving us so many scriptures of conviction. Thanks also for the time and effort you put into your study and for encouraging the body of Christ to reach out to the lost, either Catholics or deceived believers. S.C., Ponca City, OK

Mike, I found you on YouTube and now have two of your books to study and share. I am so glad for the stand you take for the Word of God and your soft biblical answers to questions you receive from Catholics. They show you to be secure and resting in the Savior’s love, mercy, peace and kindness. You are doing a great job. M.L., Selma, NC

I came out of the Catholic Church and you are my go-to guy for apologetics regarding the Catholic faith.

I feel I understand better what I left because you are so knowledgeable about the Catholic religion. Your teachings equip me better to talk to my Catholic family and friends. I can never thank you enough for your testimony, your life work and your message at Revolve Bible Church. J.M., Internet

Mike, I’ve just finished reading your book, Preparing For Eternity having been born and raised a Catholic. How ridiculous is it that an intelligent human being could believe for one second that an all powerful God would sell his forgiveness for an indulgence like a $20 Mass Card. Thanks for the guidance in your book. I am beginning my journey through the Bible with new eyes, an open heart, and a better understanding. L.C., RI

Pope Rejects Christ’s Call to Repent

In a controversial passage of his upcoming autobiography, “Life: My Story Through History,” Pope Francis says that homosexual couples, even if they should not have access to legal marriage, should still be able to “live the gift of love” with legal support. He said, “Jesus often went out to meet people who lived on the margins, and that is what the Church should do today with people from the LGBTQ+ community, who are often marginalized within the Church: make them feel at home, especially those who have received baptism and they are, to all intents and purposes, part of the people of God.” Read more. The Lord Jesus declared, “repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations” (Luke 24:47).

The following words were copied and pasted from my e-Sword, free Bible software.

Below, I used the Legacy Standard Bible, a revision of the NASB, by John MacArthur, Masters Seminary. I chose that version, because it writes all of the critical statements in capital letters:

[underscoring is mine]

Paul’s words below, from Romans and Galatians are also speaking about the IMPUTATION of Christ’s righteousness to the sinner who believes God. That is a biblical doctrine that Rome apparently does not recognize.

In Romans 4:3, “counted to him as” could be stated “imputed.”

[Paul’s words about Abraham are from Genesis 15:6Romans 4:3  For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS COUNTED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.” 4  Now to the one who works, his wage is not counted according to grace, but according to what is due. 5  But to the one who does not work, but believes upon Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,

[Paul’s words about King David are from Psalm 32]  Romans 4:6 just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works: 7  “BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED. 8  “BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT.”

[Paul is stating that God planned to save believers by faith before He gave the law via Moses] Romans 4:9  Therefore, is this blessing on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, “FAITH WAS COUNTED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.”10  How then was it counted? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised;

Rom 4:11  and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be counted to them,

Rom 4:12  and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.

Rom 4:13  For the promise to Abraham or to his seed that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.

[God promised Abraham that he would father many nations, but he had no children at that time and he was very old]

Rom 4:19  And without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb; 20  yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, 21  and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to do.

Rom 4:22  Therefore IT WAS ALSO COUNTED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS. 23  Now not for his sake only was it written THAT IT WAS COUNTED TO HIM, 24  but for our sake also, to whom it will be counted, as those who believe upon Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25  He who was delivered over on account of our transgressions, and was raised on account of our justification.

[Below, we have similar material stated a bit differently, from Galatians:]

Galatians 3:6  Just as Abraham BELIEVED GOD AND IT WAS COUNTED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS, 7  so know that those who are of faith, those are sons of Abraham. 8  And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, proclaimed the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “ALL THE NATIONS WILL BE BLESSED IN YOU.” 9  So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

Gal 3:10  For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse, for it is written, “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT ABIDE BY ALL THINGS WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW, TO DO THEM.” 11  Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident, for “THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.” 12  However, the Law is not of faith; rather, “HE WHO DOES THEM SHALL LIVE BY THEM.” 13  Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE”— 14  in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

The Law and the Promise

Gal 3:15  Brothers, I speak in human terms: even though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it. 16  Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And TO YOUR SEED,” that is, Christ.

Gal 3:22  But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. 23  But before faith came, we were held in custody under the Law, being shut up for the coming faith to be revealed. 24  Therefore the Law has become our tutor unto Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. 25  But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. 26  For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. [End Galatians text]
