This Is Why Most People Are Going To Hell – Voddie Baucham
HIGHLIGHTS from Voddie Baucham’s sermon excerpt [bracketed statements, emboldening and underscoring are mine]:
[The scriptures that Dr. Baucham cited are quoted in part so all readers know where they are located]
- Romans 3: …both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written:“None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” 13 “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” 14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 in their paths are ruin and misery, 17 and the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
- Not one person has ever done good, unless they were redeemed by Christ
- The unredeemed person’s righteousness is as filthy rags, scripture states: Isaiah 64: …Behold, you were angry, and we sinned; in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?
6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. - For example, if a fireman rushes into a burning building and saves a child, secular people call him good, not so
- Apart from repentance and faith; apart from being born again; one’s deeds cannot be good because motivations for doing them do not include glorifying God
- Because we don’t understand original sin, we have a hard time with the doctrine of the narrow gate and the hard way
- Why? We really believe that most people are good and are on their way to heaven [that idea is of eastern religion, they believe humans have a divine spark inside; furthermore, psychology believes the same, they apparently got that idea from the east]
- We believe that the way to hell is narrow and only a few are going there; people like Hitler
- Jesus said the opposite: Matthew 7:13 [ESV2011] “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
- Why do few find the narrow way to eternal life? The apostle Paul stated that in Romans 3 above
- In the following text, Paul spoke of the doctrine of depravity: Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned [most of Christianity does not even believe this biblical doctrine because they do not read their Bibles]
- This doctrine means that it is impossible for one to have been a Christian from birth; we are all born wicked, spiritually dead; furthermore, we all act that out via some form of rebellion against the holy God [as Paul made clear in Ephesians]
- Ephesians 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body1 and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
- That is why it is difficult to become a Christian and, afterwards, to walk the Christian life; in other words, it is difficult to find the narrow gate and to walk the narrow path
- There are two gates, two paths, and two crowds. There is a problem however, as part of the broad-road crowd call themselves Christian; and they use biblical language to describe their broad-road life and beliefs
- They say such things as, sign this card and you’re a Christian, it’s easy as 1, 2, 3…
- They call biblical Christians fanatics, saying they are overzealous… [there have always been false teachers, they are spoken against in the Old and New Testaments; then as now, they err because they do not follow the Bible but make up their own WAY; they add or subtract from scripture that was given by God the Holy Spirit to reveal Christ and to instruct in the Christian life; this blog has many posts about such teachers: see, Categories: Prosperity Preachers: Mysticism: Unbiblical Teachers; Brian McLaren; Beth Moore; Man-Centered Teaching…]
- The narrow gate is entered by repentance and faith [it is walked the same way; requiring one to identify, own, confess sin to God. Jesus described His true kingdom citizens in the Beatitudes, Matthew 5:3ff; the first beatitude, poverty of spirit, actually means knowing your own spiritual bankruptcy. That takes time and is revealed to one by the Holy Spirit; it is also painful, devastating one’s pride; self-sufficiency; self-righteousness…. One therein discovers that he is helplessly stuck in sin without Christ; he learns to trust in Him alone that he might walk the narrow way]
- The doctrine of original sin indicates that all people are born in sin and their deeds are sinful from birth; they will receive the wrath of God against sin and eternal punishment, unless they are born-again spiritually
- [In Romans 10, the apostle Paul makes it clear that one must hear the true gospel message, and that someone must be sent to preach it…: Romans 10:12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” End quote. The good news is the gospel of Christ. See in this blog, Categories, Gospel Message; Gospel Defined; and read 1 Corinthians 15 to more clearly understand the gospel message]
- Repentance is self-abhorrence, being so sick of yourself that you can’t stand yourself, because you realize that everything you do is filthy, wretched [poverty of spirit from Matthew 5:3, for more understanding of this beatitude, see Categories: Beatitude Life, for narrative posts; or True Kingdom Citizen, for video posts on all the beatitudes]
- [The following scripture text is an example of self-abhorrence, the context of this text is about the New Covenant to come, the chief texts about the coming new covenant are Jeremiah 31 and this text: Ezekiel 36:24 I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. 28 You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. 29 And I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. And I will summon the grain and make it abundant and lay no famine upon you. 30 I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations. 31 Then you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations. 32 It is not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord GOD; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel. End quote. When one is born again spiritually, he can see the truth about himself and his God, that he is wretched and his God is holy]
- One who is born again, and sees the truth about himself, knows that only Jesus can give him spiritual life; that life is available via faith in Christ’s atoning work via which he might receive forgiveness when he repents of known sin
- The Jesus of the Bible is the God-Man; born of a virgin; the one who performed miracles, who died on the cross to pay for the sins of those who, by faith, believe in Him; He is the One who will come to judge the living and the dead [see Matthew 25, e.g.]; He is the only answer to the problem of sin
- Faith in Him Alone and His completed work; Not faith in Him AND___________
- Cry out to Him by faith

Voddie Baucham explains how so many people especially professing Christians are in grave danger of going to hell and in fact most people are on their way to hell and eternal destruction.
