Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted – Trinity Psalter Hymnal 342

The video of this post is from the YouTube site, Brian Cochran.

I posted this hymn before, with 3 other hymns; I wanted to post it by itself because I love it so much.

Lately, I’ve been singing prior to Bible reading. I have a few of Brian’s hymns saved to a playlist on my iPhone and also have the Trinity Psalter Hymnal which I use to sing along with him. I am not so musically inclined that I can sing anything without music accompaniment and another’s voice to guide me regarding the pitch of the notes….

Anyhow, this hymn is rich in doctrine that I want to keep in mind when reading God’s word. I highlighted some of parts that move me most. Those words warm up my heart for reading God’s word, for thinking correctly about worship….

It has just been the past year or so that I have been experimenting with singing before Bible reading. I find it very helpful. If you never tried it, maybe you could, and see if it helps you enter into personal worship with an improved frame of mind.

1 Stricken, smitten, and afflicted, see him dying on the tree!
‘Tis the Christ by man rejected;yes, my soul, ’tis he, ’tis he!
‘Tis the long-expected Prophet, David’s Son, yet David’s Lord;
by his Son God now has spoken: ’tis the true and faithful Word.

2 Tell me, ye who hear him groaning, was there ever grief like his?
Friends thro’ fear his cause disowning, foes insulting his distress;
many hands were raised to wound him, none would interpose to save;
but the deepest stroke that pierced him was the stroke that Justice gave.

3 Ye who think of sin but lightly nor suppose the evil great
here may view its nature rightly, here its guilt may estimate.
Mark the sacrifice appointed, see who bears the awful load;
’tis the Word, the Lord’s Anointed, Son of Man and Son of God.

4 Here we have a firm foundation, here the refuge of the lost;
Christ’s the Rock of our salvation, his the name of which we boast.
Lamb of God, for sinners wounded, sacrifice to cancel guilt!
None shall ever be confounded who on him their hope have built.
