The following video is from pastor Gavin Ortlund’s YouTube site, Truth Unites.
I was introduced to the site by a reader of my blog. while exploring Ortlund’s site, I discovered many videos on Roman Catholicism, but most are very long. I decided to post the following video to introduce Roman Catholics to his site and to answer questions some may have about the place of Mary in the Christian faith.

Video HIGHLIGHTS:
- At the council of Ephesus in 431, Mary was called Theotokos, God-bearer; the Protestant reformers had no problem with that terminology
- Mary was Jesus’ mother; Jesus is God; therefore, Mary was the mother of God
- The word ‘God’ can be used to represent one person of the Trinity – he displayed chart in video
- Mary did not produce divine nature in Jesus
- Some points from the theologian Karl Barth from his book Church Dogmatics:
- KB: calling Mary mother of God is a test of your understanding of the incarnation
- KB: …a legitimate expression of Christological truth
- KB: Mariology is exceeding appropriate devotion to Mary [Ortlund used excerpts from Barth’s book to specifically state the problems with Mariolgy]
- The problem of Mary devotion taking from one’s worship of Christ, making one idolatrous
- It is easy for all Christians to put something higher than Jesus in their hearts – to be idolatrous
- Yes, Mary is the mother of God, but that is a Christological affirmation about the incarnation; scripturally speaking, it can’t be divorced from the incarnation, and be the source of new doctrines
- Words from a sermon by Martin Luther on Matthew 1, from 1522; he essentially said the aforementioned; quotations shown onscreen
- Ortlund briefly critiques some statements by Pope Francis requiring Mary devotion
