How “Side B” Ministries Hi-Jack The Great Commission
If you’re not familiar with Side “B” ministries let me sum them up in a nutshell. Side “B” ministries are deceptive parachurch organizations that purport to help the church minister more effectively to those who identify as LBGTQ+ and provide guidance for Christian families who have kids identifying as such. They claim to do this without ever compromising Christian orthodoxy, but this notion is untenable because these ministries promote the idea that same-sex attraction is not a morally culpable sin. Therefore it is perfectly acceptable to be a Gay-Christian as long as you stay celibate, ostensibly. If you would like an overview of how Side “B” ministries compromise the truth of God’s Word in the name of compassion, you can read the previous article I wrote for TruthScript entitled, “Compromised Compassion.”
Today, I’m writing about a further danger Side “B” ministries pose to the church. While side Side “B” ministries claim to help the church, they in fact corrupt and undermine the Great Commission inside of any church that invites them in. This is done by getting the host church to pacify the LBGTQ+ agenda.
Exposing The Corruption
The easiest way to expose this corruption is by evaluating the ten-point promise of one of these prominent Side “B” parachurch organizations called, Posture Shift. Before reviewing this underhanded promise, let’s refresh ourselves with the Great Commission, which our Lord gave to His disciples and church to embrace as our mission in life.
“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen”.
– Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV
Posture Shift’s 10-Point Promise To LBGT+ People
*Please note: The following bold print numbered points are directly from the Posture Shifts website. The bullet points underneath are my comments.
1) We will never come into your community with an agenda.
How can any Christian who is serious about the Great Commission keep this promise? The Great Commission is an agenda. It’s Christ’s agenda! Jesus’ agenda for all believers, is to go into all the world and make disciples. As a believer in Jesus, anywhere I go, I am to live my life on mission/agenda for Him. Christians cannot make a promise to certain individuals who find the message of the cross offensive that I will never seek to share the gospel with them so that they might get saved.
2) We will never discuss theology unless you seek such a discussion.
Faithfully fulfilling the Great Commission demands that believers seek out the lost and talk to others about theology whether they initiate the conversation or not. Obviously, we ought to avoid foolish and ignorant disputes in the process, but we are called to preach the gospel to everyone. (2 Timothy 2:23-26).
3) We will never align our work or events against your events.
How can any faithful follower of Jesus make a promise to never align their work against the LBGT+ community? Is the church never to pray against a pride month events? Should we promise to never organize gospel outreaches at Pride month events so that the lost might come to know the hope of Christ? This is nonsense and antithetical to the command of Jesus!
4) We will never engage in political activities aligned against you.
How can any church make a promise to never speak out against Drag Queen Story Hour? How can a Christian promise never to speak out against the sheer evil of transgenderism and the mutilation and the sterilization of our nation’s children? Should Christians opt-out of voicing their concerns about pornography in public schools? How can Christian’s faithful raise up disciples with a proper view of biblical citizenship if they make a promise like this? They simply can’t!
5) We have never and will never engage in reparative therapy.
For Christians to make this promise, would undermine the process of sanctification and transformation brought about through the process of faithful discipleship. To make this promise, believers would have to swear off Romans 12:1-2 altogether. May it never be!
6) We will always encourage your parents to welcome you home.
This is one promise we can agree upon, at least in part. Obviously, the church should never encourage parents to deal with any child struggling with same-sex attraction by threatening to kick them out of the house. The reason I say we can only agree in part is because part of the promise is intended to encourage Christian families to embrace LBGTQ+ identities and the use of preferred pronouns as a “missional way” to “compassionately love” their kids. Yet, if the church promises to do this, they will unwittingly encourage parents to teach their kids to think in unbiblical categories of ontology and personhood, all while ignoring what the Scripture teaches about our new identity in Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:16-17).
7) We will partner with you to prevent victimization of LGBT+ people.
Obviously, the church never wants anyone to suffer as a victim of real injustice, but what is meant by victimization includes helping the church not to use “triggering language” at the expense of speaking the truth in love.
8) We will labor to prevent family rejection that leads to homelessness.
This is the only promise I think we could agree upon.
9) We will collaborate to prevent bullying of LGBT+ young people.
While I would agree with the statement at face value. The problem once again is that Side “B” ministries use the same vocabulary as conservative Christians, but they use a different dictionary. Therefore, bullying can even include downplaying times when it would be appropriate to speak the truth of God’s Word in love.
10) We will honor those who are Christian as our siblings in Christ.
Since Side “B” ministries give false assurances to homosexuals that they can be both gay and Christian. This undermines and corrupts the responsibility of faithful discipleship within the church to help people discover if they really are true disciples of Christ. If a Christian struggling with same-sex attraction homosexual prefers being identified with the LBGTQ+ community more than Christ, that is a problem that would need to be addressed, not pacified, because a person in that situation cannot in good faith be called a disciple of Christ and would therefore not be a brother or sister in Christ (Matthew10:34-39). Obviously, the church will faithfully stand in the gap and pray for any brother or sister who is genuinely struggling with same-sex attraction. In addition to praying with that struggling sibling in Christ, we would continue to point them to their new identity in Christ, and His faithfulness to cleanse and forgive them every time they sin and fall short of the glory of God through thought, word, deed, or desire/attraction. (1 John 1:8-9).
Conclusion
Side “B” ministries present a very real danger to the church by corrupting the Great Commission. Any shepherd of the flock ought to be ready to use the rod and chase off these wolves in sheep’s clothing so that the sheep might be protected and brought to better pastures, where God’s Word is faithfully preached and the sheep faithfully discipled.
