In the following 4 minute video, Dr. Voddie Baucham explains how a popular trendy saying, that Christians use to describe the gospel, errs greatly.
The faddish saying: Love God; Love People
The following points are highlights of Dr. Baucham’s statements
[my words are within the square brackets]:
- Those who use this faddish saying, likely do not know what the gospel is or its significance; that is, they attribute a different meaning to the gospel than the Bible does
- Some attribute a meaning to the gospel that makes it a social leveler; making all classes of people the same socially and economically; in other words, the “social gospel”
- Some think that the word “gospel” is all the moral teachings of Jesus; in other words, they believe in “legalism”
- Love God – Love People is actually a summary of Mat 22:37: And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
Mat 22:38 This is the great and first commandment.
Mat 22:39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
Mat 22:40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” - That is, Jesus was actually saying: When I say love God, I am referring to commandments 1-4
- When I say love your neighbor as yourself, I am referring to you following commands 5-10
- Out of gratitude for our salvation, we seek to follow God’s 10 commandments by grace [the gospel enables one to be forgiven for sinning against God after transgressing His holy commandments; when we are forgiven, we can, by faith and grace, get up and continue walking towards God via His commandments; in other words, we can re-establish fellowship with God]
