Covenant Theology | Justification by Faith Alone | Saving Faith – Pastor Patrick Hines

The video in this post is from the YouTube site, Christian Sermons and Audio Books; all Christians should subscribe to this site, it has sermons and audio books from major figures in the church such as Luther, Calvin, Spurgeon…and biblical preachers of today.

The following video is 52 minutes long. Pastor Hines emphasis is to clarify justification by faith. The following narrative covers points made in the initial 10 minutes.

I recommend hearing the entire sermon, because there is great confusion in the church about this doctrine; after all, it was the problem in the Protestant Reformation and it is still a problem, even with many Protestant churches.

For that reason, I linked a 15-part series by R C Sproul below pastor Hines sermon video for those who would like to know more about justification by faith alone. Sproul takes a lot of time covering about every aspect of the doctrine, including the Protestant Reformation, as it relates.

Pastor Hines opened by reading the following passages: Titus 2:11-14; Romans 5:17-21; Romans 3:20-26; Genesis 3:22-24; and Genesis 2:16, 17. Afterwards, he shared a 2 minute quotation from a book on justification written by Michael Horton which conveyed misunderstandings that he and his wife had about justification even though they had been instructed in a biblical church.

Part of the quotation from Michael Horton’s book is as follows: Many people have told me “I feel like there was grace for me at the beginning sufficient to be saved; I was totally forgiven, slate wiped clean…;” but now it seems like, “do more, be more… and I wonder if there is still enough grace for me after blowing it so many times.”

The crux of the quotation was that neither of them understood imputation and pastor Hines explained the ramifications of that; that is, the fruit of that misunderstanding, was numerous other doctrinal errors regarding salvation.

He discuss briefly, in this sermon introduction, that erroneous fruit having to do with whether one believed that God was sovereign in salvation or whether men could choose Christ….

If one believed God to be sovereign, then one could feel secure in his salvation, knowing that it was not founded upon his affections for Christ, his pursuit of holiness….

Those who believed they had chosen Christ, always believe they can loose their salvation….

He was introducing an explanation of justification by faith alone, apart from the sinner’s love for God, etc.

Around the 10-minute mark of the sermon, he was talking about the works of the devil against this doctrine of salvation because it is so wonderful….

Genesis 2:16 The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not *eat, for on the day that you eat from it you will certainly die.”

Romans 3:20 because by the works *of the Law *none of mankind will be justified in His sight; for *through the Law [comes] *knowledge of sin. 21 But now apart *from the Law [the] righteousness of God has been revealed, being witnessed by the *Law and the Prophets, 22 but [it is the] righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those *who believe; for there is no distinction, 23 for all *have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God displayed publicly as a *propitiation *in His blood through faith. [This was] to demonstrate His righteousness, *because in God’s [merciful] restraint He let the sins previously committed go unpunished; 26 for the demonstration, [that is,] of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who *has faith in Jesus.

From the church website:

We subscribe to the Westminster Standards as our doctrinal statement. It consists of the following documents:

The Westminster Confession of Faith

The Westminster Larger Catechism

The Westminster Shorter Catechism

We also believe that Christian Worship is to be regulated and defined by God’s Word, the Bible.

Our worship services are designed to please and honor the Triune God of the Bible. We place Scripture reading and the preaching of the word of God at the center of worship along with Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. These are God’s gifts to His church and ought to always be at the center of Christian worship. We are a congregation that loves to sing God’s praises, recite His Word back to Him, and actively engage in hearing and learning from God’s Word.

We embrace and promote a comprehensive Christian world and life view.

There is no area of life which is not under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It is to God and His law which all people, including governments and civil rulers, will answer. The Word of God embraces and informs the way we view marriage, the family, children, education, politics, worship, law, government, war, the church, missions, evangelism, and worship. In the world today there is a battle of opposing worldviews. There are basically only two positions: God’s Word and man’s ideas. We stand positively for Biblical truth and negatively against man’s ideas which are opposed to Biblical truth.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only hope for mankind.

Because all men fall short of obeying God’s law, all men everywhere are in need of divine grace and salvation from God. This salvation is found only in the Lord Jesus Christ who died for sinners, was buried, rose again, and is alive today seated at God the Father’s right hand.

We Worship God Together as Families.

We offer nursery during the morning worship service for newborns and infants but encourage people to keep as many of their children as they can with them for morning worship. The audio of the service is in the nursery via speakers. There is also a crying room with a video screen and audio of the sermon. We offer Sunday school classes for all ages, but worship together as families. We do not offer “children’s” church.

All who profess faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and are members of an evangelical church are cordially invited to participate with us in the Lord’s Supper.
