Come Harvest Time, a song of the transition to eternity

When I hear this Glen Campbell song, it is easier for me to contemplate death.

Since my mother died suddenly when I was 22, I have sought understanding of God and the afterlife, in order to help me prepare for my own death. I’ll be 68 this fall, time has sped up it seems, and my own death is closer than it ever was. And having gone through cancer recently, the fragility of life is very apparent to me.

The song and video present death as a necessary part of living. Somehow, that makes it a bit easier for me to think about.

I hope that this song helps you consider your own death.

I’ll paste in the lyrics after the song.

Author/Artist/Singer: Glen Campbell
Music Title/Track: Come Harvest Time

Planted by-y God
In a field without worth
We are but seeds in His eyes
So He nurtures with grace
And His hands work the earth
That His fruit may be sanc-ti-fied
Co-ome harvest time

Come harvest time
What thanksgiving we will show
When the Plowman bri-ings freedom
From the earth here below
Come harvest time
Oh what jo-oy will be known
When He gathers the sou-ouls
Of the seeds He ha-as sown

So when doubt dries the land
Or the cold war wi-inds blow
When the floods of indiff’ence rise
Oh the roots that faith grew
Will kee-eep us strong
‘Til our last sunset leaves the sky
Come harvest time

Come harvest time
What thanksgiving we will show
When the Plowman bri-ings freedom
From the earth here below
Come harvest time
Oh what jo-oy will be known
When He gathers the sou-ouls
Of the seeds He has sown

In closing, I thought that I would cite a few scriptures that contain a similar message:

Ecc 3:1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
Ecc 3:2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

Gen 5:5 Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.

1Co 15:23 But there is an order to this resurrection: Christ was raised as the first of the harvest; then all who belong to Christ will be raised when He comes back.

1Co 15:54 Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die [and our mortal bodies have been transformed into immortal bodies], this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory.
1Co 15:55 O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? ”
1Co 15:56 For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power.
1Co 15:57 But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1Co 15:58 So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.
