I am not sure whether this was from Morning and Evening thoughts or was a sermon excerpt, but I wanted to make a few points about things that Spurgeon did not cover [I have heard him speak on the beatitudes and how the Spirit works such things in the life of a believer…].

The beatitudes are Christ’s declaration of what a true believer looks like. He looks like that because after conversion, the Holy Spirit works those things into his/her life by lessons in daily experience that reinforce what he/she has learned in the word.

No new convert can jump from conversion to purity of heart, in other words. That might not be clear from the video.

The first lesson: poverty of spirit. The believer must learn that he has absolutely no righteousness in himself and that he cannot earn any that might make him acceptable to God or help him/her enter into heaven.

By many failures to adhere to God’s standards found in the 10 commandments, one comes to that understanding, and by prayer. Seemingly, simultaneously, the sinner begins the lesson of mourning his sin. He comes to learn that sin is actually a turning away from God to the world… and will keep him stuck spiritually or make him enter into backsliding.

Those first two beatitudes, and all that lessons that enable one to perceive these states of blessedness, are seemingly the foundation of the other beatitudes. That is, one could never be meek without first having learned that he/she is a helpless sinner stuck in sin and unacceptable to God if he doesn’t take on Christ’s righteousness by submitting to His Spirit and receiving the lessons he needs to experience.

Even Moses had to spend 40 years in Median before he was ready to be God’s servant, then he had been sufficiently meeked that he could receive those hard providences from God about leading Israel through the wilderness.

And the spiritual edifice that Paul had constructed for himself, made of his self-righteousness and accomplishments…, had to be crushed on the Damascus road; thereby he began his lessons….

Also, all the means of grace are intended to humble a believer: preaching of the biblical gospel; reading of the word; prayer; taking of the Lord’s supper; and fellowship with believers around the word of God.

Arriving at poverty of spirit might take the rest of a believer’s life; or maybe only 10-30 years. We are naturally full of pride, self-reliance, self-righteousness… and do not like to submit to anyone….

The scriptures state such things about Israel. Isaiah, for example speaks much about the sin of reliance upon things and people other than God.

We must be shown these things and come to understand that we absolutely need the only righteousness that is acceptable to God the Father, that of His Son. That was earned by Christ on the cross and by being the only one to ever follow the 10 commandments in His earthly life.

By imputation, we receive those by faith, at conversion.

We apparently also receive sanctification by faith and continuing in the Means of grace; not by our efforts. Though we do need to strive in the strength of Christ’s Spirit. [I don’t yet understand that sufficiently to write on it].

I can say that if you think you are a good person because, for example, you chose Christ and go to church… then you have likely not yet been sufficiently humbled to know much about poverty of spirit and mourning because of your sin.

There are two blog series herein on the beatitude, see CATEGORIES: Beatitude Life; and / or True Kingdom Citizen. The former is narrative and the latter, uses video clips of sermons to explain all the beatitude states.

Christ declared those states ‘blessed,’ the world sees them as just the opposite. That is another thing that a new convert has to comprehend, the perspective of Christ regarding what blessedness is and is not.

[Prosperity preachers teach that Christian blessedness is what the world considers blessings; that is a lie, based on what Christ stated in the beatitudes. I have heard MacArthur say that prosperity gospel followers want the things that all non-born-again people want in their natural state. You will never know if you do not read through the Bible for yourself.]

Charles Haddon (C.H.) Spurgeon (June 19, 1834 January 31, 1892) was a British Reformed Baptist preacher who remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations, among whom he is still known as the “Prince of Preachers.” In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people, often up to 10 times a week at different places. His sermons have been translated into many languages. Spurgeon was the pastor of the New Park Street Chapel in London for 38 years. In 1857, he started a charity organization called Spurgeon’s which now works globally. He also founded Spurgeon’s College, which was named after him after his death. Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, a commentary, books on prayer, a devotional, a magazine, and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Arguably, no other author, Christian or otherwise, has more material in print than C.H. Spurgeon. Top 10 Most Popular Sermons (Playlist):    • Top 10 Most Popul…
