10 Things You Should Know About The Book of Revelation

Nancy Guthrie wrote and read the following 13-minute, audio-book essay, about her book,  Blessed: Experiencing the Promise of the Book of Revelation.

Video Highlights [some of the following words are my own summary statements, she says more about every point]:

  1. Many avoid Revelation because they fear they won’t be able to understand it; but it was written for 1st century believers. Some special skills are required to better understand apocalyptic literature
  2. Revelation is not primarily about the future, but meant to fortify believers such that they might live out their lives in bold allegiance to Christ. It fortifies believers by showing them what God has done in the past, is doing now and will do in the future to preserve and protect His people…. It facilitates their living of life in ways that will matter eternally
  3. Revelation enables believers to view reality from heaven’s perspective…; we get a glimpse of heavenly worship…; we get a sense of the true value of earthly things as compared to those of heaven…
  4. Revelation fills up our shallow understanding of true blessedness…. True blessedness belongs to those who live boldly for Christ regardless of the consequences… those who live via the righteousness of Christ that has been imputed to them, as worked into their lives via His Spirit
  5. Revelation pictures Christ differently from the gospels: therein, he was the incarnate, meek, mild Savior…; but in His second coming He is the Warrior King, coming in judgment; but He is also the faithful bridegroom…
  6. Revelation helps us to evaluate the content and character of our worship, as we get a glimpse of the standard of heavenly worship
  7. Revelation is a call to patient endurance for Christ via a bold allegiance to Him in our daily lives; we are called to overcome the pull of the world and the deceit of the devil
  8. Revelation calls us away from the world’s acceptance, influence, affluence…. Not all the churches in Rev. 2 and 3 were undergoing persecution, some suffered from wealth and comfort, and were moved to compromise to keep those things, instead of standing for Christ and what that entailed
  9. Revelation invites us to celebrate, not be embarrassed by the wrath of God. The modern world is all for a loving God and does not know what to do with a God of wrath. Revelation invites singing along with the heavenly saints in praise of the wrath of God which demonstrates His perfect justice and righteousness….
  10. Revelation brings all the themes of the Bible together: themes starting in Genesis, that were developed through the historical, poetical, prophetical portions of the Bible are concluded in the book of Revelation. Therein, is displayed God’s creation of a Garden better than Eden….

Today, we’re excited to share with you an audio essay written and read by Nancy Guthrie entitled “10 Things You Should Know about the Book of Revelation.”

Nancy Guthrie teaches the Bible at her home church, Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Franklin, Tennessee, as well as at conferences around the country and internationally, including her Biblical Theology Workshop for Women. To hear more about the book of Revelation, check out her book “Blessed: Experiencing the Promise of the Book of Revelation”. Over 12 chapters, “Blessed” covers the full text of the book of Revelation, exploring its call to patient endurance as God’s sovereign plans for judgment and salvation are worked out in the world. In this book, Guthrie shows how Revelation is less about when Jesus will return and more about who we are to be, what we are to do, and what we can expect to endure as we wait for Jesus to return to establish his kingdom in the new creation.
